New Tools for the Tiny Homestead

I trust your week went well! I’ve spent the last week making some upgrades to my tiny homestead. I’ve bought a new upright freezer and a new MacBook Pro 14″ M1. The new computer is very powerful and makes editing these vlogs so much easier. I’ve also harvested more broccoli – and its leaves for a quick stir fry with red beans and rice. 🤩👍🏾 “A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.” Gertrude Jekyll

Good day everyone! I’ve received a few messages recently that some of you haven’t been receiving notifications of my posts. I’ve spoken to YouTube Creator Support and they’ve provided some solutions:

Problems with notifications? The common reasons why a subscriber will not receive notifications.
1. They are not actually subscribed to your channel, but are confused by “Recommended video” notifications.
2. Their bell icon setting is set to “personalized” rather than “all” notifications. This resets if they unsubscribe and resubscribe.
3. Their greater YouTube notification settings are set to “None” for channel notifications.
4. They aren’t logged in.
5. Their device level notification settings are overriding their YouTube settings
Another reasons viewers may not be receiving notifications.
1. They already received the maximum number of notifications from your channel that day.

Thanks for your patience and continued support. It means a lot to me.

  1. That is a great lunch! I’ve eaten lots of greens now I know I can also enjoy broccoli greens, a double harvest! Congrats on the new freezer and Mac! I love apple.

  2. Hello Robert! What a beautiful day it is. You’re looking well. Cheers on the new apple. Just bought my first one. Have a great weekend!

  3. Great installment, Robert! A little bit of everything… you have the same problem with space that my wife and I have in our cozy one-bedroom apartment. Trying to find space for things. I agree – the freezer didn't look right where you first had it. It's in a much better spot now! Good show! Too bad you didn't have room for a chest freezer as they are more economical – all the cold stays in when you open the door. With an upright, all the cold flows out when the door is opened and then must be cooled off again. Oh well, some things cannot be avoided. The power company likes you, I'll bet! Just like ours. While I do have a few Apple things, we're mostly x86 PC here as well as Android. It's because I prefer to "roll my own" and I can do that more with conventional PCs and Android phones. Add new parts, swap out video cards, hard drives, that sort of thing with PCs, and firm wares with phones. All fun stuff. Thanks again! Be well, My friend!

  4. Good morning Robert! 🌄😊 That pot of greens looked DELICIOUS! I like garlic too. Love growing broccoli; even after you pick the first head, it keeps growing new little heads. And of course the blessing of the greens!

That freezer is perfect for your space, I like the way you rearranged everything. So neat and organized! May this season of hope be a blessing to you. You are a blessing to all of us!

  5. Hello Robert! This was such a fun video of a day in the life on Robert! The broccoli looked wonderful. Lots of your garden produce is going to be so tasty this coming winter season! A new Apple computer as well! Very nice! Seeing Spunky's picture on your computer sure brought back alot of memories! He loved going to the park and showing the other dogs that he was top dog! ha We all loved Spunky waking up and coming to the patio door to see what you were doing! 🤩 Lots of beautiful memories that will always be with us! Have a great weekend my friend! 'Ki wo tsukete!'

  6. That broccoli looks yummy 😋. The freezer is HUGE! I like how you can see into the shelves 😊 plus no frost! Nice video! 😘

  7. Nice job on the layout change, Robert. I use a older Pro for work,. It is pretty good, but I have ground it to its knees while editing a video. I would recommend a trackpad, but that'll mean another "getting used to" period. 🙂 PS. I miss Spunky, too!

  8. In our appliance shop, we can have the doors rehung to make them open the best way for us, that might be something to consider? Didnt you have a walk in pantry, could that be rearranged somehow? I'm concerned the shelves block half the door…

  9. Evening Robert..I can see all is well with you. I was just about to say..we're is the Air Fryer..then there it was. 👍🤣💚🇯🇲. Well I did purchase a Chromebook and Samsung microwave . Reluctantly I have a chest freezer that is only ever half full..owing to the regular power cuts for up to 10 hours.

  10. Loved the toe shoes you were wearing out in the garden, Robert! I’ve never seen that type before. Is it an updated version of a tabi? Amazing how far Japanese appliances have come since the 70s. Back then, you had to go to the PX to get any large appliances like refrigerators and freezers. The Japanese ones were tiny compared to American ones, and I don’t think there were any stand-alone freezers. There was always the challenge of getting an American-sized appliance into a Japanese house, though, always a tight squeeze.

  11. What a great video! There’s nothing I like more than a good kitchen reorg, that includes the fridge and freezer(s), be it my own or someone elses😄. I remember how much I enjoyed watching the tour of your enormous pantry cupboards in the living room. Pantries and fridges are fascinating places. Grocery carts fall into that category as well. The contents of some can be quite scary😳! Food for thought (pun intended). Whenever I’m in Japan, I always enjoy popping into Yodobashi and Bic Camera and the household appliance section is always a must see. I particularly like looking at the fridges and making comparisons between them and those here at home. It can’t be museums and temples all day, every day. It’s important to mix things up😄. Thanks for another great video, Robert. Have a good evening 🙂👍💕

  12. Very nice video sir. I admire those who can cook. I’m also retired military. After I left the service (Army), I worked as an English Teacher in China for 15 years. I taught in Universities throughout China, and fell in love with Asian culture. After teaching Chinese Mandarin in Honduras, I returned to Michigan to look after my Mother. Having missed the life I experienced in China, I decided to go back to Asia, but this time I will experience life in Japan. I will be coming to Japan this March, and Im really looking forward to it. By the way, I just purchased a new Apple MacBook Pro as well, and I love using my mouse with it. As a man of color, I feel blessed, but life here in America, as you may already know, is just not what it used to be. I too would like to feel free; unencumbered by the pressure of expectations of others. I definitely can relate to how you must feel there in Japan. Kudos to you sir, and thanks for the videos you’ve made.
