Visit Our Allotment In The Snow

Join us for a visit to our allotment in the snow to see how the vegetables are doing. We are growing a lot of veg still on the allotment so the snow will have an effect on it all so today we visit to see our allotment in the snow.

The allotment garden is doing well even in the snow but we cannot harvest the root vegetables until the ground thaws a little. If we tried to dig a carrot or beetroot we could snap if as it is so cold. The ground being so cold does stop the beetroot from going to seed which is useful.

The onions and garlic will be fine as they are over wintering varieties. The frost will even help the garlic bulbs to know that it is time to split and form the garlic cloves that we look forward to harvesting in the summer.

The winter weather does have the benefit of killing off the garden pests or at least slowing them down. That includes the weeds so there are many benefits to having the cold weather.

  1. As always thanks for the video. I made straight for my Sprouts. At least they're happy with the frosty weather! I've added more straw on the onions and garlic. They can stay warm. Having pruned back the fruit canes in November, Ive covered them with straw held down with netting to keep the snow off. Looks like a weird crop from a distance. Dispached and processed the chickens this morning so they can go off to the local church for (us) oldies Christmas dinners. Once again thanks, stay warm and Happy Christmas.

  2. Thank you for the tour of your plot. I was worried about the onion and garlic not surviving, We have had about 10 days of -3 to -7 c night time temperature 🥶😰
