Years ago I got rid of all the lawn in front of my house (which is nowhere near the size of yours!) and replaced it with pea gravel, which looks appropriate for my Spanish-style house near the beach. Since I have a low lattice fence across the front I planted some things, like jade plant, in huge pots hidden by the fence -much easier maintenance than when in the ground. That encouraged me to grow more in large containers around both sides of my yard, which is separated by a walkway to the house.
