Kamogawa Kyo-machiya AFTER renovation – Traditional Japanese House Tour – New Tatami room and Garden

The renovation of the Shimogamo Kyo-machiya started in August and was just completed in middle of December 2022. The architect Nohara-san walks us through the newly renovated machiya and talks about the areas that were kept or repaired and the areas that were newly added.

  1. Great tour. The architect must be so happy with this project since he was able to maintain the house's historic identity but bring modern comfort to the building.

  2. I have a question on the roofing tiles. What materials are those and are they in productions still.? They look beautiful.

  3. Love the historic preservation of the beautiful Japanese aesthetics. Many commendations to the architect and construction team!

  4. Wonderful job maintaining the originality while updating with new amenities. My only concern is they left the roof the original, possibly a budget contraint. I wonder if they did sometype of assessment to ensure the roof won't leak into the newly renovated areas. Also if the roof is the original with no insulation, possibly the owners may have to deal with a cold house during the winters of Kyoto (will need to wear layers in the house, Kotatsu etc). It would be a bit of concern if there was a leak that would ruin all the hard work that was just made. Great video architect did a nice job and the luxury bath is probably my favorite.

  5. Excellent tour, Stephen! The camera work was steady and you moved the camera at just the right speed from scene to scene. Nohara-san gave clear explanations–I wasn't expecting to hear English from him!
