Let’s go check out the death and havoc wrought by the epic 2022 arctic blast. The garden has experienced a shock, what lived and what died? Did our preparations do any good? I’ll show you the aftermath, it isn’t pretty.

Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

'Where ye came from , there ye shall return' hallelujah! ❤️ Merry and blessed Christmas Scott and your loved ones
Fortunately I left my winter garden unplanted. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
We hit 7 deg F here in Georgia last night. Suppose to be 17 on Christmas Eve. I covered my Collards, Brussels and Broccoli with blankets and plastic. Will see what happens on Monday. Merry Christmas and thank you for all you shared this year !
I’m with you brother, If not for the grace and mercy of the Lord I would have perished in to a Godless eternity many years ago.!
Thank God and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Amen Scott. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Much love ❤️
Merry Christmas to you Scott and family – thank you for your time in all your videos and what you share. God bless you all.
It was worth it to cover the plants. Merry Christmas to you.
Some of my stuff made it. My peppers are a goner. My broccoli and some cauliflower made it. Carrots not sure yet
30 miles east of Gainesville, Fl. 22 last night, same tonight, supposed to be freezing Tuesday morning also. I am keeping my citrus covered until then. I have all my sensitive stuff is still in pots and under the garage with a heat lamp. I built a plywood room around each of my avocado trees with a heat lamp too.
Sorry to hear about your garden 😔
My garden was pretty much destroyed up here in Cleveland, TX
Good thing I started a bunch more seedlings this month.
Sucks starting over though.
😂😭
Most of mine got waxed by the freeze but that's okay. We are gardeners and we will persevere.
Mulch with straw, and then cover for better results. Up here in zone 6b, it was -4, with a -26 windchill. People up here do okay with cabbages and relatives in the winter. I know my garlic will be back, and the Egyptian walking onions will be okay and some other perennials.
Carrots ought to be okay.
Thank you for your Christian testimony.
Merry Christmas. Looking forward to how your garden develops into the next season.
Thank you for your video brother and for sharing the Gospel in the end. As expected, we got below freezing here in Tampa as well. Our plants just have to survive two more nights. I already see a lot of damage to our tropical fruit trees (mostly the burned leaves). I simply had no chance to cover them all. Some trees are too big. Good luck to you and everyone else. Please don’t get discouraged and keep growing.
I can't play chicken with the freezing weather right now. For me it's snow and Ice until the spring thaw. I am in the belief that these extreme weather patterns will become more of a new normal. The people that insist things will return to the old reliable weather may be in for a rude awakening. It always sucks when your efforts are destroyed, but as we smart ones know, nature will always keep us on our toes.
jesus aint real bro
It was a good experiment anyways. Merry Christmas!!
Amen brother
Merry Christmas Scott, Phoebe, and Family!! Thank you for your example… both in gardening and Christian fellowship!
Merry Christmas from Rosenberg, Texas!
Hoping my newly planted camellia and magnolias are fine, but I'll wait till Monday to check on them 😅
Merry Christmas! God is good always. Thank you for reminding us of this. 🙏
Merry Christmas!
It's what it is , but we never going to give up !
I totally understand you. I lost everything! If it wasn't for out lord Jesus I wouldn't be here either.
Merry Christmas! God bless you and your family 🙏🏻
You have such a positive attitude and find the good side of the freeze. Bless you and your family. TFS 🙏
I'm sorry about the loss of your garden. I lost about 80% of mine too. I'm just going to cover crop it and build up the soil fertility until spring. Thank you for including the gospel in the end of this message. Jesus saved me too, pulled me out of a lot of darkness 9 years ago, and I'm never going back. Merry Christmas.
I think you might be surprised to see what actually will come back. I hope so anyway! Merry Christmas.
No doom and gloom here. I'm in AZ and we having 70 degree temps feeling blessed right now for sure. I got maters I'm keeping alive!
Our pastor's Christmas message was on light and hope. We can reflect the love of God to those in need of hope. I think your followers built hope in you to find ways to protect your plants with what you had on hand. That exchange taught us that sincere encouraging words matter. Thank you for honestly sharing your discouragement, for acting on the encouragement given, for sharing the results, and for seeing possibilities amid the damage.
Best ending of a video ever. Merry Christmas my brother in Christ.
I don't think I've ever seen you in a straw hat. . . of all the days!
Merry CHRISTmas!
If anybody can come back from a minor gardening incident it's you, Scott. You'll be back and rocking in no time. I wish you and yours as merry a Christmas as I can, pal. Thanks. ✝️✝️✝️✝️🎄🎄🎄🎄
I’m having hope that not that many of your plants will pull through! I was wondering why you are not leaving the Large buckets off in the day -for the sun?
Amen to our Lord.
So glad we have Jesus Christ for eternal life, even as we look upon loss! I too would not be here but for the uncompromising and unconditional love of our God! May God continue to bless and use you to minister to His people on this channel and elsewhere. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Thanks so much for sharing the good news!!❤❤❤
