It’s Winter Outside and Our Potatoes Are Sprouting! – and it’s DAY 12 of our 31 Days of Giving!
Our 12th gardening giveaway video focuses on storing potatoes for winter (without a root cellar), and what we do with potatoes that have already sprouted during the winter.
Potatoes will typically sprout within 2-4 months if the conditions are not appropriate to keep them dormant. One way to keep them dormant is to have a root cellar, but since many of us do not have a root cellar, another option is to use a container and sand, which we will show how to store potatoes in sand in this video.
Another option is to plant seed potatoes in small pots to create potato seedlings that can then be transplanted later when you are ready. In this video we talk about these options and optimal potato storage temperature and optimal potato storage humidity.

Timely video. Our potatoes are sprouting. Can you take off the sprouts and cook with them?
Congratulations and Merry Christmas to the winners! I've seen photo albums used to store seeds as well.
I had all of my stored potatoes sprout thanks to improper storing. Something ripped up and ate all of the ones I had planted outside. I am torn between using a buried trash can and just digging down a ways to create a root cellar of sorts. It rains a LOT where I live, so that's kind of an issue.
Congratulations winner!
My potatoes always sprouts so early (not properly stored). And I don't have chance to use cause the frozen ground.
I’m trying a redneck root cellar this winter: I buried a metal garbage can in my greenhouse, put a layer of hay in the bottom, and have been filling up the can with potatoes and other root vegetables. I haven’t checked on them in 2 months but plan to open it ion New Years Day to see if the vegetables held and if the potatoes didn’t sprout. The temperature and humidity have been pretty good, so fingers crossed 🤞
Congratulations! Great idea for using up the potatoes that have sprouted.
Have you considered digging a root cellar?
Congratulations Winners. Great video on potatoes. Love those taters
Here inColorado I’m zone 5, y wrap them o news paper, then I put them on a paper bag and leave them on my garage were usually on winter is around 20 to 40 degrees and that work pretty well
Congrats to the winner
Great prize! I have that prize in the saved section of my Amazon cart 😆
Congratulations to the winners 😉
Congrats to the winner.
Congrats Never knew this great information
Yay, thanks so much! How exciting… also thank you for the great potato tips.
I have potatoes sprouting I'm going to put in little pots like that. Besides the ones I have already planted in containers in the house.
Grats! I have some dollar tree storage boxes that my seeds are in.
Great tip!! A root cellar is on my to do list but I was wondering about this!
Awsome video, congrats to the winners! Merry Christmas 🙂
Thanks for the great advice ✌️
Very cool! Never seen a storage method like the 5gal sand bucket.
Magic Molly looks wonderful; I might try that next year.
congrats winners!
Congratulations to the winners!
got the same issue. I think I might just start regrowing them here soon
Congratulations to the winners!
Congratulations to the winners! Id like to try sprouting indoors to get a head start. I was able to plant up my grow bags mid April (soil was new and warm) here in Zone 5 SE WI. That was great and it gave me time to grow something else in those bags. But sprouting inside sounds fun just to see how early I can get a harvest
I’m really enjoying your videos. I love your enthusiasm!
Congratulations to the winner.
Congratulations 🎊
Congrats to the winners! I have a tip for the first prize: if you flip the cases over, you will have more room for your labels and they still fit! Thank you for covering how to salvage potatoes for new life!
Congrats to the winners! I've got potatoes sprouting too. I have to get a new grow light hung and then I'll be planting them up. Will be a fun experiment!
Congratulations Winners.
Congratulations. Thanks for the potato tip
I'll definitely try pre-potting my sprouting potatoes now. Would never have thought of that on my own!
Congratulations to the winners!
I never knew about storing taters in sand. Clever! 😁
Congratulations to the winner. Great information on growing potatoes.
Congratulations, I think you have convinced me to try growing potatoes inside.
Congrats! Missed it by that much. As an aside, I tried the sand bucket trick this year with my potatoes and sweet potatoes.
I live in Zone 6 and I plant my potatoes in October/November and they seem to produce better plus you don't have to worry about storing them. I've been doing this for 20+ years.
Congrats to the winner! Great tips about winter growing and storing potatoes. First time hearing about the sand method. Neat idea!
