Traditional Onion Sowing | Tradition or not? | Best way to sow onions | Green Side Up

Boxing day is the traditional day for sowing onion seeds, or is it? There is much debate about this but I believe it is tradition, watch the video to find out why, also discover why it is too early to sow leeks and shallots, a mistake many people make at this time of the year.

ONION SPECIAL I was part of a whole hours live discussion about growing Onions along with Jb and Tony Smith on the Potty Mouth Garden Club here https://youtu.be/vTOoDPg05HM this is a discussion and live question and answer video one hour long, its not to be missed !

  3. Hi Steve I am new to veg gardening thought I was being clever putting seeds stait in to 6" pots will have to see how things turn out. But I will know in future Thanks.

  4. Great video, lots of information I managed to get out and sow my onions on boxing day this year. So hoping for a good crop haha

  5. I have sown my onion seeds in cell trays but I plan before the end of this week to broadcast sow some more, this will be a first for me. as for leeks its the end of February start of march I sow them.

  6. Hi Steve another great video last year I multi sowed my onions in February (Charles Dowding way) it worked well for me but I had a lot of small onions so I remembered your video from last year and sowed them boxing day and will separate them this year I did also sow my Shallots though so may have to do some more later. Going into my second allotment year now and loving all the help from your videos, Thanks Steve , all the best for the up coming growing year.

  7. Hey Steve, I agree it is more important to know when you need your plants ready and what you will do with them and then you can calculate back to find the best day to start them. You may grow them for eating by a particular date and to show them on a different date. So you will need to start them on different dates to arrive maturity on your target date.
Here in Minnesota US I have a short growing season 155 days so I have to start veg that can finish be harvested while leaving enough time for another veg to be transplanted in and harvested all with in 155 days! It is like an air traffic controller for the garden.

  8. Hi Steve
    Great video mate, very informative.
I normally sow my big onion seed in October, just before we go on holidays for 5 weeks.
My main crop onions will normally be sown mid to late December, then in January it is all go with Chillies / Peppers, and my 1000 flowers.
Leeks I will do late Feb.
Happy new year to you and your family.
    👍👍👍👍👍

  9. Hello Steve. Please forgive if this is a daft question but I'm totally new to gardening!!! I live in NW Turkey and I think I'm a 'zone 8' but our first frost – according to a local farmer – is in 5fe 3rd week in December. I showed my onions and garlic on 22nd Nov and they've grown! Should I sow seeds now or will everything mature at the same time and give me hundreds of onions at once? Thanks for all your help. Your videos are a huge help to me 👍

  10. Great information Steve & love the Boxing Day story 😊
We’ve all got our seeds ready … ready to follow along ❤
    bring on 2023!!! ☀️🙏🏻

Glad to see your shoulders better

  11. I don't see the point you could potentially be potting on onions 3 times before they go in the ground you could sow them beginning Feb they would catch them up within about 3 weeks

  12. Hi Steve. My question is about shop bought compost. Can I re-use last year's hanging basket compost for instance and if so, should I feed it before using it? Since I first started watching you I always sieve the compost, and I'm using a garden sieve that belonged to my mother in law that she bought in 1965!

  13. As always Steve sound practical advice, it was useful to hear the theory’s around onion sowing on Boxing Day I agree with all of it but I think also Boxing Day was the last day off work for many men . I will be sowing my onions seed in the next few days and will be following your advice completely. Hope you’ve had a nice Christmas and I wish you all the best for 2023.
