The BEST Traditional Japanese Garden || Sengan-En, Kyushu Japan Vlog

In this Japan travel vlog we’re showing you one of Japan’s best traditional Japanese Gardens, Sengan-en, located in Kyushu, Japan. The Sengan-en traditional Japanese garden and wider complex are a UNESCO world heritage site and designated place of natural beauty, using spectacular scenery of the Sakurajima volcano, making it easily one of the best traditional Japanese gardens in Japan.

This vlog is from our recent trip to Kyushu, the most southern of Japan’s 4 largest islands. Kyushu is internationally famous for its stunning volcanic scenery, numerous hot spring spas (onsen) and delicious food. We ended our trip in Kagoshima, an area famous for its rich history, many volcanoes and shouchou. In today’s video we explore the stunning Sengan-En gardens and accompanying stately home of the Shimadzu family. The 12 acres of calming traditional gardens include peaceful water features, a bamboo grove, stunning flora and fauna, it’s own shrines, tea rooms and even a mountain hiking trail. The most striking feature of Sengan-En has to be it’s use of the Sakurajima volcano and Kagoshima Bay as “borrowed scenery” in the gardens design. The gardens have a perfect view of the active volcano, which you might be able to see erupting on a clear day.

The accompanying stately home of the influential Shimadzu family is a must see due to the deep historical importance of the families history over 800 years. The international relations forged by the Shimadzu clan was influential in developing industrial modernisation not only in Kagoshima but all across Japan.
