  1. Weather, who knew that this happened in 2005? And probably before!

But, your raised beds will do quite beautifully!

    – 12 C here in Athens ON!

  2. Glad youā€™re okay. We are okay here by the coast. I covered some of my plants that were getting waterlogged. Everythingā€™s growing like crazy so thatā€™s one benefit! Stay safe.

  3. We're up in eastern contra costa and last week's storm flooded a small part of my garden (flooded my concrete patio and had to go out and buy a the last pump at harbor freight), but so far the flooding hasn't gotten that bad again. I can't go out and pick the weeds that have exploded, but otherwise it looks ok. The wind worries me though!

I live on the san joaquin/sacramento delta and its still below 2017 records (which isn't near danger levels either) so I'm actually enjoying this weather otherwise. My rutabagas have gotten huge! The plants and delta animals are all loving it.

  4. I've had a bunch or 3 and 4 inches days up here about 18" total this past 2 weeks. Lots of rocks, slides and down trees up here in Butte County.

  5. Everything here in LB, Cali in our yard is happy šŸ˜Š Polinator garden has Mammoth Sunflowers now and Oriental Poppies. The peas, spinach, celery and carrots are fantastic. Thinking about putting out lettuce seed šŸ¤”

  6. Nice video. Everything looks really good n green.
I'm up in Long Beach Ca. and my container broccoli and cauliflower, kale, sugar snap peas kind of exploded in growth the past couple weeks.
Had to harvest some of the broccoli/cauliflower because the crowns got so big I thought something was going to happen to them. Everything here is just bustin out in greens…… šŸ™‚

  7. Have been concerned about you all. Thanks for the video letting us know you all are ok. You have been in my prayers and will continue to be in my prayers. Love both you guys!

  8. I live in the South Bay, and we got some rain, but nothing like it has rained in the northern part of the state. It is flat here so no chance of mudslides. Most of the area around the Palos Verdes peninsula is former marshland, so I wonder how it can handle excessive rain.

  9. One of my college professors used to say to us ā€œitā€™s about people, not things.ā€ And I appreciate your spirit and caring that everybody is safe first and foremost. Even though Iā€™m sure youā€™re disappointed, you had a fun attitude by splashing through the water in what couldā€™ve been a very sad moment. I will have to tell you that I gasped when I saw your smart pot area.
Livestream was wonderful yesterday (hours later), but we watched you as I planted some lettuce. My neighbors must think Iā€™m absolutely crazy. Iā€™m running out of grow lights, by the way. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

  10. We have drained down our pool 3 times in a week and a half. Early this morning we had a tornado warning and quickly got an inch of rain (tornado warning in Modesto CA?) crazy. Craziest year I have seen in the 42 years we have lived here. Good thing I hadnā€™t started my fall garden, seeds and starts would float away with the rain and wind. Everyone stay safe and follow the authorityā€™s directions.

  11. We have some minimal flooding up here in Belmont, but nothing like some other places. All I can say is that our groundwater is certainly getting replinished, which is not a bad thing. Stay safe and dry!

  12. kim and camera guy take good care and hope your property and hope your garden makes it stay well and stay safe !

  13. HI FROM SOUTHERN , CA LOTS OF RAIN DON'T THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA FOR MORE JUST NOW LET THE GROUND SOAK UP A BIT FIRST TO KEEP FROM FLOODING ! TAKE GOOD CARE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES, CHILDREN, DOGGIE AND GARDEN ! I WILL PRAY FOR YOU ALL.

  14. You guys are so sweet and caring – no wonder we all love you so much! ā¤ You guys stay safe!
Itā€™s been crazy here in Northern California too. Weā€™re doing ok. Flooding and damage south of here. Garden holding out ok so far. Everyone stay safe!

  15. I am East of you about 50 miles. My backyard is all mud but the garden is so green and the plants are loving it. So happy we chose raised beds and smart pots!

  16. Iā€™m up in Sacramento. My yard is holding water and when I walk out to take care of my chickens, I sink down in some spots because itā€™s so saturated, but nothing too serious. Been able to work from home all week so we donā€™t have to drive out in this rain. Iā€™m over this rain. I wish they were a little more spread out so the sun could dry up the ground a little bit before getting saturated again.

  17. Good to see you holding up there as i was worried for you guys. Hope everyone is staying safe there. What with the fires and drought , all of the natural vegetation is not there to suck this water up in the mountains and higher grounds, hence the landslides and sink holes.

Maybe take the pots off of the decking as the extra weight will warp the wood if it hasn't already? You could flip it over and put some weight in the middle, whilst it is dry off, to straighten it out.

The bedding will be the least of your worries. You can install o ring hooks into the lower beams and hook on some strong bungee cord to bring it back in. Have you tried placing a board over the bend area and tried to hammer it straight or are you waiting until the rain has stopped? Don't wait too long after the rain as you want to do it before the log dries out. I would also remove the soil, like a trough, to relieve the pressure on the wood where the joint/ is. A solid T joint behind the stake will also keep it together.

More importantly, have you checked your exposed supports to the house and porch? Normal wood, expands and contracts under normal conditions seasonally. Wood that has and is used to exposed prolonged heat can cause cracks. When highly water logged, the fibres in the wood can weaken and break down.

The unexpected cold snap of snow and ice in London in early/mid Dec thawed out and caused a lot of mess as it did elsewhere in the country and then it rained and rained. Took Thames Water a week for their 3rd party Co. to come to us after the 48hr promise appointment was broken, then another and so on. I ended up "tweeting" them and the next day they responded. Took a lot of calls and messages but i sent a photo of the poop on our patio and finally a couple of hours later they came. Even the local fox was disgusted when it visited! Turned out one of our new next door neighbours drains were blocked and when they were unblocking it found a brick in their drain. That is all they had said but didn't say what blocked it. We don't have waste disposal systems as much as the little AC units here. Not sure where they have moved from but it is common knowledge not to pour fat, wet wipes, nappies, etc into your toilets and sinks here.

Anyway, after the heavy rain we had from the north, we are now getting your rain from the west. So the rest of the week is wet again. Min temps still above 5c/40f overall nothing below 0c/ 30f for the next 10 days. It is mainly wet and windy (wind on alternate days).

I have a google spreadsheet that i have for the plants that i am growing, with all of the growing info and seed stock. I also mark down when i sowed, planted and harvested stuff in the notes. I have created a tab for this year too, bringing over any still in dirt.

I also have a tab marking down weather anomalies. It is something i have have took up even more seriously, after clearing out my late Mother in Laws property. I wish i got more time with her partner who had a Doctorate in Geology. His research journals are very interesting and also comprises of his travels in the Merchant Navy around the world.

He also done no dig veggie patches for many years before i met him. That is why i am so fond of his research into his tomatoes, whilst we were renovating the house from scratch.

Well, like i said before, stay safe and check the property outside often. Cover crops will also help with absorption and soil erosion too. They are the sacrificial plants for the time of climate, like Nasturtiums in summer, like rye and vetch. Serve no purpose but to keep the soil going.

  18. I'm so glad you guys are good. My grass is a little flooded but my herbs and citrus trees are loving it!

  19. So happy you guys are ok! I made it through the storm in Buffalo areaā€¦I am south east of the city and while we did not get as much snow at all, we got -5Ā°F. Temperatures for three days straight with ridiculous winds. My pipes did freeze but nothing burst thankfully. My Homestead made it through, my garden is OK, and hopefully the rest of the winter will be uneventful. Stay safe everyone!

  20. Out near Temecula, our soil is soaking it all up, so far. Plants in buckets are loving it. I'd just given everybody a snack of worm castings.

  21. Glad you guys are safe, I'm just east of you here in the I.E., with all this rain, keeping an eye on my veggies, and flash flood warnings. Stay warm, dry, and safe guys.

  22. When I heard that CA was getting dangerous amounts of rain, I though of you and your steeply terraced yard. Omg. And it may have always been this way, but at 1:11 in the video, behind you, between the two red smart pots, one part of the wall is lower and more forward than the other. It made me dizzy with concern. Any chance you can call the installers, or a local property engineer, to assess risk over your entire yard, and offer advice? Hoping there is no structural risk or expensive repairs that need doing. My heartfelt concern and good wishes go out to you!

  23. Hi Kim and Camera guy, I am glad you guys are okay. My garden is a little flooded, but holding out okay. I only have a few brassicas growing, but I am a little worried coz they are getting too much water and not enough sun. We are doing okay. I live in Merced, CA and some of my friends was affected by the flood and they had to evacuate. Stay safe

  25. Tree is down, but didn't hit the house! Thank goodness! Roof, literally, blew off our rental! Thank goodness for insurance!

  26. Itā€™s a mess here in Silicon Valley!! The fava and garlic are fending for themselves. Iā€™m hoping my feral kitty has found a place to stay dry.

  27. Kids, it's free irrigation. Here in Nor-Cal we love it because it's filling the reservoirs and adding to the snowpack.
