Cottage Garden Design Tour: The Backyard



Things are moving slowly in the backyard and the cottage garden, but moving forward nevertheless. With the lattice extension up on the fence, I can work in the backyard with a bit more privacy. I’m not only thinking through a design, but also beginning to curate what will… and mostly what will NOT remain in the case of all of my garden accessories!

    You have so many irons in the fire right now. That’s got to be somewhat overwhelming. I’m a list making when I begin planning. So I offer a suggestion to make a list of the “Must Have” features you want in the backyard (e.g., patio dining, gradual stair entrance, flagstone path, etc.). Then make a list of the “Dream to Have” features (e.g., potting shed, greenhouse, etc.). This helps when planning out the space so that every Must Have is not forgotten and Dream to Haves can be included. All the best to you, Stewart and family!

    When you were talking about wanting geraniums, it finally hit me – you remind me of my precious mother-in-law when she was younger. We lost her last March and I miss her so very much. She loved geraniums, she always dressed so cute, jewelry, and even your hair cut. She was tiny with a similar personality. She got Alzheimer’s in 2008. When she had to go to a care facility, I knew she would HATE how they dressed her and how her hair was not colored and kept in a nice short cut. We got her as sassy and cute as we could with her favorite turquoise jewelry for the funeral. Thank you for warming my heart with some sweet memories today!!

    Hi Linda, I like watching your channel, so inspirational. I think you did well when you moved to this adorable house… more manageable, my opinion. My favorite is the kitchen and the sexy bathroom. I'm looking forward to seeing how the backyard turns out, which I know will be awesome!!!     Gotta do a sun/season study. You’ve just moved in. You do not know where the sun will (really) be @ certain times of the day. I’d keep everything in storage and look at the yard as a blank slate for at least 8-months and use the 3-newly pruned trees as anchors for now. ***JUST my opinion…the fence is too dark. AND PLS do not move the boxwoods that are (obviously) happy where they are even though they are easily moved. In my area, it’s so hard to keep boxwoods happy.

    I can not wait to see how you transform your new space. Just lovely. I have been watching your summer garden tours. We had six inches of snow last night. I am dreaming of warmer weather and getting started in the garden. I am a novice and am so inspired by your channel. I have some big plans this spring. Thank you for the mental health break from the frosty February weather here in Iowa.

    First off Linda I am so happy for you and hubs to have found such a beautiful place…one level living is important as we age. Will you at sometime post a floorplan of house and which way is N S E W….I'm interested in how sun will shine on house and garden…it makes such a difference on how the view out of windows will look… my garden is on south side of my house…so my flowers turn their beautiful faces to my back yard neighbor and not my deck…also wondering how your driveway is located….back street or alley I'm unable to figure it out…please know that you bring much pleasure to all of us who watch your videos…have been watching marathon style this week…

    Loved today's walkabout. I bet you don't miss the squirrels . I think they moved here. Haven't had them but I'm thinking since our cat is gone they have eaten most of my tulips in pots! I'll have to get some chicken wire! I think the front garden, going by the drawings, is going to be fabulous! Can't wait for next Wednesday, Linda. 👍🏻

    Linda why don't you try to see if you can find someone who can eliminate that whole concrete set of stairs in back and put in a walkout deck from that door and then a couple of stairs going down to the yard

    You are wise and blessed that you were able to schlep all those wonderful pots with great patina to your new/old home. You can see where they can be tucked and repurposed as in aged or stained or whitewashed, etc. Shop your stash and then toss remains. So many folks would be thrilled to have your culls and the remainder can go to help a charity resale shop! Win! Win!

    Love the new fence! Your large window facing your back yard would be a great place to mount a full length window box, viewable from the inside too. You could do a seasonal themed scene in the window box viewable from the inside and out. A winter Christmas scene would be great fun with lighted topiary’s & mini Christmas trees. Summer scenes with cascading plants and flowers. Fall with pumpkins etc…🌱

    💯 make the backyard enter/exit more accessible because that will 💯 make the backyard more inviting and less stressful when going out to the outdoor room. The planting can wait until after that.

    Exciting times for you! Interesting to catch glimpses of the surrounding neighborhood which looks charming. Give yourself some grace as moving is tiring physically and emotionally.

    Dallodils that are blind….no flowers…need lifting & splitting out individually so the bulb can rejuvenate & will expand naturally & flower after the 1st year
