  1. I have grown Rudbeckia winter sowing in milk jugs where I didn't do ANYTHING like you did and it did GREAT. I was shocked. Milkweed did well too. Coneflower…..nope.

  2. I’ve winter sowed my poppy and echinacea seeds here in Tx, zone 8a, and have had 100% germination in all 8 jugs which I’m pretty excited about! I’ll prob try ur method with the clear bins next yr as I already had the clear water jugs this year. Wishing u lots of success!! Question – do u think the labels being left on the bins on the top and side will cause any issues with certain plants getting a small amt of shade as they grow? I was just wondering.

  3. Another informative video! So do you occasionally hand water these if there is no rain or snow? or does the humidity create enough moisture to keep them going? Thats a lot of plants so excited to follow along with the progress. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  4. Awesome video with great relatable advice Roxanna! This is my 3rd year with winter sowing and I grow any seed that tickles my fancy and I've had great luck with it for the most part. I've bought all kinds of containers as well as used salad, muffin, take out containers, etc. for the seed starting (as long as they had lids so I didn't have to cut and tape). I ignore them for the most part unless precipitation is low and when we get frost later on.

  5. I have been doing winter sowing fir a few years now, and I've learned a lot.

I will only do poppies WS they do so well. Also brassica, greens, perennials. And some some flowers I want a lot of.

I also use the containers to grow my beans, but I want until it's warmer out.

  6. Excited to starting winter sowing tomorrow in zone 10b! Moisture is the challenge I am planning tackle. Have my spray mister ready! 🎉

  7. And..I’m using clear bins just like you in the video. Thank you for the clear direction 😊…looking forward to learning the freezer trick 😊

  8. Really enjoyed this video. So many different flowers and they are all stunning 🤩 if you decide that you have too many, I will buy some from you, no kidding 😊

  9. Hello! This is the first time I found your channel. And thank you for this winter sowing process. I’m in southern Indiana, Evansville, zone 6B. I love the idea of the bin for winter sowing and may try it!

  10. I have found the seed starting mix doesn't stat as moist as it needs to be. Especially when it got warmer, the seed starting mix dried out much faster than regular potting mix. In my experience, sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos do very well with winter sowing. As well as perennials too

  11. Great video. I have not had much success past two years with jugs. I am going to try this method this year. Your videos are VERY professional!

  12. Excellent video! I appreciate all of the detail you provide about winter sowing.

  13. I've used milk jug containers for winter sowing years ago. It was awesome. I haven't done any sowing this year because one day we have winter temps, and the next, we have spring/summer temperatures. I love the totes idea. Great video, and thank you!❤️🌷

  14. Shasta daisies and rudbeckia will not germinate for me. I bought shastas many times and I can’t them to survive here. I think it’s the humidity here in SC. They’re so pretty!

  15. I don't winter sow my tender warm season plants like cosmos until mid March here in zone 6a. My reason is because of out crazy weather that can be warm enough for them to germinate and then freezing enough to kill them. I have to watch and cover them when the temps dip too far after they germinate. I love winter sowing and have had 100% success.

  16. Agree that everything going up in prices motivated me to try growing things from seed like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. I'm also getting into canning so that I can keep what I grow.

  17. Definitely will be winter sowing. I have a small home with a big yard. So growing more seedlings would really help with prices going up

  18. Zone 6a – Have been winter sowing for the last couple of weeks. Fingers crossed I have good results. Great Video!

  19. This technique makes so much sense to me. It's very similar to what happens when seeds naturally germinate in your garden over the winter. Thanks for sharing your setup. This season I am trying to cold stratify soil blocks, but I think I'm going to try your method next season. Very clever.

  20. That is a great tip for using the mesh tray inside! I've not had the best luck with winter sowing with only a few exceptions. My best success also came from sowing directly in 2.5" pots (but no covers) and these did amazing compared to the jugs so I'm doing a bunch of test pots (1 per variety) as well as sowing indoors for insurance. I've not had an issue with critters but speeding up germination and growth would be great, so I may pick up a bin to see how that goes. Great video!

  21. Thank you for this great video! Would appreciate your feedback on the boxes. From my research these 60 quart (57 litre) containers (exact product you used) are no longer available but they are in 75 litres. Same 24 inch length & 19 1/4 inch width, but height is now 15 1/8 inches, not 11 inch. I am wondering about the impact on the "greenhouse effect". Is it too tall? Or should I punch out fewer holes so there can be more humidity? I have had so so results indoors trying to use humidity domes (with adjustable opening).

  22. Oh my. You have 3 bins this year! Good luck. I cannot tell if the lid is white or clear. I am having a hard time finding a clear lid. If lid is white I am assuming you used last year and it will work just fine. What size is container? Did you purchase on Amazon?

  23. Do you find that you have enough holes for drainage? How far apart are they. I didn’t get a good look at that. Thanks for this great tutorial and wish you great success. I will be trying the containers for the first time this year. Usually do the jugs.

  24. Believe it or not we have had 11 1/2" of rain in the last 18 days. So even with holes in the bottom, the pots were getting too wet. So hubs took a small plant saucer, turned it over, and elevated one corner of the tote box. The water drained out. If the pots start looking like they need water again, I will remove the plant saucer.

  25. This my first year trying the milk jug method. I still have seeds I want to start, gonna give this a try. I love all your knowledge you share with all your viewers. Down to earth and easy to watch. Thanks for sharing

  26. This is my first time winter sowing in 8b. At the beginning of February, I put out some jugs and the broccoli and cabbage have sprouted, the flowers have not. When do I give up ? I'm also going to use your method this weekend for more flowers.

  27. OMG, Roxanna! This is a game changer for me.
I haven't had success starting seeds either method, indoors or out.
    Those sealed bins are perfect.
Last year, I used berry containers, lettuce "clamshell" containers and critters or wind tossed them around.
Another advantage to winter seed sowing, you don't have to babysit the seedling sown indoors by moving them outdoors everyday.
No matter how I planned for last avg. frost date in my area it's really subject to that season's weather conditions.
I saw MI Gardener do something similar. He cleared off snow from his raised bed and planted seeds directly onto the soil. I think he planted carrots. Then turned over the bin as a dome, secured it with rocks and it also had drilled holes for rain to get in.

  28. At was the name of seed company you mentioned? Outdoor something?
Those double click cosmos are so pretty.

I agree, seeds are definitely higher this year. I imagine nursery plants will be sky high this year.
