It Worked! Root Ball Apple Propagation#trending #gardening #urbangardening

Propagating apple hardwood cuttings can be an effective way to grow new apple trees. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Collect the cuttings: Take hardwood cuttings from the previous year’s growth, in late winter or early spring before bud break. Choose healthy shoots that are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter, and 8 to 10 inches long. Cut at a 45-degree angle, just below a bud, and remove any side branches or leaves.

Prepare the cuttings: Dip the bottom inch of the cutting in rooting hormone to encourage root growth. Then, make a small trench in a well-draining, sandy soil in a protected area of your garden, about 6 inches deep.

Plant the cuttings: Insert the cuttings into the trench with the angled end facing down, and pack the soil firmly around the base of the cutting. Leave about 2 inches of the cutting exposed above the soil level.

Water and care for the cuttings: Water the cuttings thoroughly, and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Cover the cuttings with a plastic bag or cloche to maintain humidity and warmth. Place the cuttings in a protected, shady location to prevent sunburn. Check the cuttings regularly for signs of growth and remove any diseased or damaged material.

Transplant the cuttings: After 1-2 years, when the cuttings have established roots and started growing, they can be transplanted to their permanent location. Plant them in a sunny, well-draining spot with good soil, and protect them from pests and diseases. Water the young trees regularly and prune them as necessary to encourage healthy growth.

With patience and care, propagating apple hardwood cuttings can be a rewarding way to grow new apple trees.
