Making Swales To Improve Irrigation

If your vegetable or flower beds are on a slope and you find you are having trouble either retaining water during the summer, or keeping the water pressure evenly distributed along the entire length of your irrigation pipes, then this video is definitely for you!

During our first season at Springfield, we discovered that our irrigation system was nowhere near being up to the job. This season we decided to turn our vegetable beds into swales to hold summer rain water in the soil where it’s needed and to equalise the water pressure in our irrigation pipes across the entire length of each bed.

Swales have been used for thousands of years to modify the flow of water, either by moving it from one area to another or to slow it down as it flows across the land, allowing it to sink in to the soil and irrigate crops.

In this first video we show how we have landscaped the growing area to form swales following the contours of the land. Over the coming season we will be posting a series of videos showing how we turn these swales into productive no-dig beds.

If you would like to learn how to make and use an A-frame to create perfectly level swales then like, subscribe and ring the bell to be notified when we post new videos.
