  1. I bought a hellebore last year that was blooming. This year it has put on new growth but no flowers. Did it not get cold enough? NE Florida zone 9a

  2. For spots where you have bulbs like the daffodils , do you plant annuals over them when they are done for the season, or just leave a space empty until the following spring when they reemerge?

  3. I'm in zone 8b, northwest Florida panhandle and my Encore Autumn Fire and Bonfire azaleas are in full bloom. Also have some johnny jump ups from seed blooming and a Ever Midnight Agapanthus, some red dianthus planted last year that I thought were an annual variety. Purple Diamond loropetalum is in bloom and my red drift roses and a coral rose bush is blooming. I'm sad that my Chef's Choice rosemary looks like it didn't make the deep freeze we had here which surprises me since your rosemary looks good. I would love to have a few hellebores but I'm afraid they might not like the hot, humid weather we have on the Gulf coast in the summer.

  4. I'm jealous. We can't get our Hill's Hardy Rosemary (Hill Hardy) to bloom. Planted in mid-March 2021, it didn't bloom the first season, but it was a tiny shrub, so we weren't too surprised. But last season, growing quite vigorously starting mid-to-late Winter, it didn't bloom for all of 2022 despite the plant tag indicating it blooms from Spring through Summer.

I understand over-watering can thwart blooming on them, but we've been in semi-drought conditions for a few years now here in Central Texas. The ground, which I prepped back in 2020, drains well on a slight slope away from the house, and we are not over-watering it with our drip irrigation. So, once again, I get to live vicariously from your garden. 😕

  5. Here in Garner NC I’m enjoying the daffodils I planted last fall and plan to do even more this fall!

  6. I actually have azalea blooms coming on my old bushes as well as tulips, and Brunnera….what a crazy season this is starting out to be. Zone 7b greenville SC

  7. Snow on the beaches and lower hills in the SF Bay Area with a high of 46’ and nights in low to mid 30’s for another 5 days. 3.5” rain overnight in our area of the East Bay Hills. Didn’t bother the hellebores, daffodils, hyacinths or snow peas/lettuce/spinach, though.

  8. I'm surprised forsythia wasn't included :p Granted, mine are already turning to leaves and dropping the blooms this week. I also recently discovered the plant Quince blooming in my yard. I loved that edgeworthia you showed. I might have to find a spot in my yard for one 🙂

  9. Nothing blooming in 6a, Northern Indiana yet, so I'm living vicariously through you and the British gardeners I follow. I bought a new place last month, so I have no idea what sorts of things are in the yard yet. I do a walk around every day to see if any bulbs are going to pop up. 😀

  10. my cherry blossom is in full bloom in zone 7a. bloomed in April last year. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  11. Amazing and wonderful to see your plants blooming. Here in Portland Oregon, zone 8b, we just had record breaking 11 inches of snow and nighttime temps in the teens. Under the snow, the hellebores are blooming and daffodils are 6 inches high. So interesting to see the difference in your zone 7b garden and our zone 8b snow 😢

  12. Hudson Valley NY Zone 6b: hellebores, crocus, snowdrops, hamamelis Arnold's Promise. Had some unusually warm weather (near 60) but now back to the more usual 30's and 40's with nighttime temps in the 20's.

  13. Lovely yard and flowers–such inspiration! I love that edgeworthia! The previous owner of this property planted daffodils scattered all over the yard, and what fun to see them bloom. There are two clumps of forsythia about 12 feet in diameter that looked wonderful this past month, even covered in a 1/2 inch of ice (we limbed up trees and they had some sunshine this year). Redbuds are not blooming yet. Thank you for the great videos!

  14. I just realized something from your explanation of the first plant you showed. Edgeworthia Crysantha is called Mitsumata in Japanese. Mitsu means three. Mata means ramification. It was one of those moments you just realized something made sense all of a sudden. Greetings from Tokyo, Japan.

  15. In Buffalo NY 5b my Diane Witch Hazel is the only thing blooming. It is now frozen under a thick layer of ice from a storm earlier this week that coated everything.

  16. I'm in 7B but in NYC, and my edgeworthia (about 2 feet tall, just planted last fall) had lots of buds when I got it–I was so excited! But when we had that extreme sudden hard freeze last December, I think it destroyed the buds because they'e just hanging there looking sad. My Daphnes were covered in buds too for the first time (18 months in the ground) and I think they suffered too. I didn't protect them.😭

  17. I'm a little jealous of your early spring. I'm in 5b Colorado. We just had two days of near zero temps. We won't have true spring for a while yet.

  18. Zone 9b northern cal – rosemary and society garlic blooming and grape hyacinth, and large pink hyacinth smell so good I wish I planted more last fall!.The camelias are amazing, I can see the difference that top dressing with compost and all this rain has made, and the potato vines are covered in white flower clusters…and then there's the lavatera bush the gift that keeps on giving.🥀💮🌻

  19. I have daffodils blooming today, they’ve had large buds for a couple of weeks but two sunny, 75°+ days have brought on the blooms. Southern Ohio, Zone 6b

  20. Very nice, none of which I can grow in my region….I have never actually seen a Hellebore in person! I like the perspective of you handling them, from pictures I assumed they were much smaller! 🙂
I am 8a, Las Cruces, NM, a very dry and hot extreme for the most part…the heat is what takes most of it out!

  21. Just moved down here(SC) from MN (5.5 months) and my Skip Laurel is blooming! Just planted her a week ago! Spring down here is amazing!!!

  22. Q – Do you ever worry about the daffodils or plants like it that are labeled toxic to dogs? I have a GSD that leaves nose art everywhere and I would like to place bulbs next year.

Texas. Zone 8b/9a. My blueberries are in bloom. Hopefully roses will be out soon as well! 😊

  23. Woah woah woah, your forgetting my favorite plant of all, ogon spirea, also daphne odora, distylium, purple plum, and wild cherry tree

  24. Our winter heath and crocuses are the only thing blooming in our 6B NJ garden. The heath actually had honey bees on it a few weeks ago.

  25. We're just coming out of our ice storm :-), so nothing in bloom. But it's wonderful to see your early bloomers!

  26. Here in south Alabama, our loropetalem is blooming. Love all your flowering bulbs and now I want some hellebores!

  27. Jim I would love pictures of you garden with plant selections. I would like to turn my yard into a garden and would love to study yours. Thank you

  28. My Rosemary does not look like yours, it looks dead. I am in zone 7a & I wonder if we get too much moisture over the winter to keep it happy?

  29. I splurged and ordered a BUNCH of small Hellebores for a new shaded side yard revamp this season. I have quite a few near by to that area that just bring so much joy to the spring garden that I’m so looking forward to seeing.
QUESTION though; why will you be removing all the leaves to mulch? I simply put mulch on top of them and let them decompose and feed the garden. It’s Not a criticism I’m just trying to learn from all the different approaches offered out there.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and beautiful gardens 😊
