About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

  1. Hi doug ,, i am starting to make some raised beds this year ,, i am using cement blocks

  2. So I have a question about the raised beds I have had raised beds in the past and the problem I have is the weeds that come up around the beds and also inside the bed against the boards. How do you prepare the ground around the beds to prevent weed growth?

  3. Myself and my 14 Yr old built our beds last yr out of an old double divan bed that we ripped apart to get all the wood 😁 getting ready to build another along with a polytunnel as our crops were unsuccessful, hoping the tunnel may help

  4. I'm in southern Az and hardware cloth is a must! Squirrels live underground here and as I watered all my beautiful flowers I had put in the night before, they were being pulled under ground as I stood next to them! It's a must!

  5. One of the best gardens I ever grew was on a weeds I had dug up and put into a long pile. One year I had no manures to put into the garden and not much soil to top it with. What I did that year was put some of our clay soil on top of the dried weeds, which were mostly Canadian thistle and dandelions. I found a bag of peat moss and put it on top of the clay soil. It was only 4 of 5 inches deep. I then planted my garden and it grew so well, I was amazed. I grew on that mound for for or five years before it became flat with no sign of a mound. I was impressed for the good.

  6. Doug, great video, like your raised beds, however I love back to Eden gardening and have had tremendous success with it .

  7. How do I keep critters out of my garden? We have wild rabbits around here and many other small mammals.

  8. don't ever trust a man his age that needs an image. Who will literally where I had make it look old and put on clothes that look like he made them himself and he acts like he lives a simple life but he's got a lot of money his family goes through hell just to make sure that they all live how he wants to live you can see his whole family and way of life is a one-person idea that everybody has to live by. this man quotes Ted Nugent. this man is fake. when you get a guy that has a lot of money and he's the his age but he needs an image can't just look normal he's got to actually look like he's an Amish guy like he really lives off the land. that guy could buy you. he should have a disclaimer before his video starts telling you that he's got well over two million dollars invested in this so it looks like he's living a simple life and doing it all by hand. nothing could be further from the truth. Even is water filters are the most expensive you can buy.he's not out there doing it by himself he hired guys to put those planters together him do it. Sky's full of crap and he makes these fake videos look impose on this garden thing he's literally propped a foot up and he's got this weird clothing on that he doesn't wear. You probably does know that he has a certain amount of views . he wanted to see thought he could cover create a protest to was it Target or something because they don't discriminate against gays they actually supported a game March or something so he wanted people to march in front of the place so that we can get back to the days of discriminating against gays and blacks and whatever. this isn't a good guy he's just wants attention. no one his age should need an identity like they're in junior high school I don't care if it is ZZ top. The guy is fake and look at how much money you're looking at this isn't something you just go in your yard start splitting logs into boards and putting together like he acts. He's dressing like people that did it like that. He's dressing like people that actually split wood by hand and he's doing none of that

  9. Just found your channel. We love our raised beds. Plan to building them stronger like yours. And Doug you seem hilarious to hang out with and talk to. Wish you were in Tennessee. Thanks for the video.

  10. Refreshing to watch someone actually doing the work, rather than talking about possibilities.

  11. Everything has its place. Back to eden is fantastic for trees and for plants that have a woody stem, like sunflower, oakra, kale, basil, etc. Paul Gauche does not use wood chips for beds where he grows leafy vegetables. For that he uses compost from his chicken coop, which includes composted wood chip and other yard waste. But, he outs that compost on the soil, not in raised beds. Raised beds are great for not having to bend so much. They do heat up faster, but they also cool down faster and lose moisture faster. Everything has its place though.

  12. I've always wondered how to grow things that vine like Cantaloupe and cucumbers in a raised bed and if growing cucumbers vertically would produce a lower yield.

  13. Great info, ad always from your videos! What tool did you use to cut the hardware cloth?

  14. What's the Best n Cheapest Trellis method that you like? Love the easy bed building tips! I just purchased 2 more 4×8 foot stainless steel beds to go with my wooden beds … expanding..

  15. I would like to do this on the side of my house with a series of sloped, tiered raised garden beds. My concern is deer and other critters eating my vegetables(which they have done in the past to my potted tomatoes and cucumbers). How can I keep them from eating all my food??!

  16. It looks like you filled the bed entirely with compost. I keep reading that we must mix with top soil, planting soil, etc. CAN we fill a bed with compost only?

  17. Great video.. will be making raised beds soon, just one question do you ever make your own compost ? maybe I missed a video on that.. I would be very interested to see that
