Vegetable Gardening

Where To Put Your Vegetable Garden

Hey DirtMagicians! In this video, we’ll be discussing factors you need to consider when deciding where to put a vegetable garden and also cover the fundamental topics like sunlight, soil, plant types, and microclimates. We’ll talk about how to start a vegetable garden.

You’ll also learn how to 1) track sunlight throughout the day to determine the sunniest spots in your yard, 2) which plants thrive in different shade and which need lots of sunlight, 3) and how microclimates can be used strategically to grow specific vegetables.

Cold-tolerant vegetables are plants that can handle temperatures around freezing and can be seeded and transplanted in early spring. These hardy veggies can survive light frost, making them ideal for cooler climates. Some examples of cold-tolerant plants include spinach, peas, asian greens, mustard greens, and radishes. After the frost passes, you can plant spring onions, lettuce, broccoli, kale, and swiss chard, among others.

Heat-loving vegetables are plants that cannot tolerate cold conditions and require a minimum nighttime temperature of 10°C (or 50°F) to be transplanted or seeded outside. These vegetables thrive in warm weather and are ideal for hot climates. Some examples of heat-loving vegetables include tomatoes, eggplant, cucumber, beans, zucchini, and peppers.
