Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

You do you whatever works for you if someone doesn't like it? They don't have to watch your channel or buy from your store. but I think it's fine because your time is valuable. And people are learning from you so if they're learning? What is wrong with you sharing other things with them? They have a choice to buy or not to buy. Love your Channel.
Do what you need to do to make money off this channel! Product recommendations/ links are so helpful (especially to inexperienced gardeners like me 😅).
Glad I can enjoy your garden, we're getting heavy snow, expecting a foot, with blizzard conditions. Then we're above freezing, even some days above 50, and rain for five straight days mid-month. I'm usually too eager & plant too early, then have to cover everything to protect from frost; don't think that's going to happen this year.
Amazon shop is fine. Making money is a good thing.
Amazon links are great! We are all looking to make a few spare bucks now a days.
The fact that you are seeking your followers opinion on how they feel about amazon links is great. I heard about seeds for generations from you and ordered from them, they are great! You are trustworthy and good for your word.
I am currently reading the book Forbidden History for the 3rd time. So much information to soak in. World history. It takes the readers from BC up until 2017. It's a great read, very eye opening. I have learned so much…little tid bits of info that you would have never gotten in school.
I don't think ill of anymore who has a shop on Amazon or Etsy . I appreciate the fact that You guys share your knowledge with the products and seeds anymore if there's something that I can purchase if I remember to go to your shop I will, especially with the discount.
Do your Amazon shop..if it’s not what you want..don’t buy..I really enjoy your channel..great learning videos..
I don't mind you guys selling or promoting. If I'm not interested or it's too long I jump past that part. But typically I just let it run.
I appreciate an Amazon shop to explore new products if I trust the content maker. I think you should do it 😊
Here in Chicago the weather sucks too. We might get a handful of perfect days but it's either too hot or windy and raining. Super short summers. Winters are very long and gloomy. Luckily I started indoor growing to help me keep my sanity through those long winters. Grew lettuces, basil, arugula, parsley, onion, tomato's all winter and fresh salads all winter.
I finally grew my first dwarf pomegranate indoors. It’s been super fun. Now to figure out what to do with a pomegranate 😂
Nothing wrong with merch and Amazon shop. I like good gardeners who try stuff and have recommendations. I don’t like whole videos selling some product.
I like merch. Shirts and hats 😊
I have no problem with the advertising unless a YTer promotes "their" products as the "only" way to do it. Promoting is fine, high pressure tactics are a turn off.
Yes for Amazon store 🎉 big time yes
I absolutely wouldn’t be turned off by amazon links/products as amazon is how I’ve made a living since 2017. I’m a professional graphic designer and lucky enough to be part of an exclusive program they have. It would be a fantastic program for you to join to sell your own branded merch with no cost or shipping on your part. If there is a way to message you I can tell you what to do to get into it. What’s good is that your merch through this program will get better rankings than if you did it as an outside seller like most people. It also will expose you to new potential followers. I know people slam amazon because they see it as this gigantic corporation but I hope people keep in mind amazon is basically an internet mall filled with millions of small businesses and self employed people like me who are supplying the products you see there to customers worldwide, something most of us wouldn’t have been able to do on our own.
I’ve been hoping and praying for BGSG merchandise for years! Would love to see your design skills on a T-shirt
Kellogg mix here in California is sold at Home Depot I don't buy it
I wouldn't be turned off with a store I like tees. Amazon is ok for a commission for you as long as you are honest about what you say. My problem with Amazon is my church is my non profit for my purchases.
Don't mention it every single time. Just make it natural conversation when it's appropriate. But make your buck and add the link in the description. It's established… just do it. This video example of your plugging just comes off whiney…THAT (tone, wording, attempt of empathy is manipulating, whatever) is what's a "turn off". Just do it.
…it's one complaint after another. From "I need to make money" to "its so hot" to whatever else…it's unrelavently forgettable. My best recommendation is watch uplifting ideal videos you like just before you start filming. Some of the best accounts are just vlog style of "this is what I'm doing" and this is why I'm doing it. Every so often, these quality account owners help viewers reframe their diary documentation to broad range by reminding us "remember I'm in growing zone 5" or "this plant is labeled successful in [whatever] growing zone" or "if you live in colder regions, just push back the time three weeks [or whatever]". It's about the way one engages. U can be fun "this is what I'm doing" or you can be "this is what I need to do to make money or survive"…one is just depressing and negative. And one can be realistic without being "crowd fund my life!!!". 😅
No problem with a bit of merchandising, as long as it doesn't get excessive. One suggestion, Phoebe meme T-shirts!
No worries on posting links or merch. Constant straight commercials by YouTubers are the one thing that annoys. However, even that helps encourage and keep videos going. And it’s not that hard to skip the commercial/promotion.
FYI – Paint pens work on plastic tags and pots. Interesting to know pencils work.
I can't stand the marketing. I've been both disappointed and discouraged away from some of my favourite channels that I've followed for years.
Thanks for the pencil tip on the tags…. Normally we have very moderate weather here on the PNW coast but we had a tiny bit of snow yesterday, boo.
You do what ever you have to do, so you can continue to make your wonderful videos. I love them.
I don't mind Amazon storefronts. I've bought from other YouTube gardeners. 🙂
Always humid and hot, I already strung up shade cloth because of drooping plants and I'm just 90 minutes east of Houston. Good luck!
The summer time can be brutal in Zone 8a Central Arkansas; however, we have four seasons to enjoy. We have had tornados recently which brings our community together. I'm not sure any location is perfect with each presenting its own challenge. I don't have any issues with affiliate links or store fronts. While I'm not a big graphic tee guy, some might enjoy Phoebe merchandise or Black Gumbo Logo items.
Amazon is a good thing – say hi to Phoebe
Great to see you're working with the IV Organic brand. I've used the fertilizer and 3 in 1 plant guard in my garden for over 3 years with amazing results. it's good to see the brand break out to other state like Texas. Organic is the way to go. No more latex and other chemicals please! Thank you Scott. I love me them pomegranates.
My problem is that when I click on Amazon for YouTube channels it never brings up my actual account. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I wouldn't mind cause I've tried buying similar products before and never seem to buy the right ones. The seed cells you have look awesome and those are something I would like to get. The ones at home depot just ain't cutting it any more.
I have no problem at all with Amazon storefronts and think merch is great too!
I always endure the ads unless it's over 2 mins long when I'm pressed for time because I know it helps support y'all. And I totally understand how important it is to support your videos and I want to see more 😊
I think it's a good idea to offer merch to better support as well as possible discounts for viewers 😉❤
God Bless & prosper you and yours ❤
Would love to see links and a shop!
I enjoy your garden and your advice. I would be glad for you to have an Amazon store, so I can easily find what you are using.
Hummingbirds eat spider mites and aphids, as well as a variety of other small insects that tend to plague the gardens. They need the sugar water in the feeders for energy to fly like they do, however they eat those bugs for their protein needs. You might want to add a couple of hummingbird feeders (in a shaded area) and the flowers that attract them to your garden. The sugar water is 1 cup of boiling water mixed with 1/4 cup of plain white table sugar – stir until the sugar is dissolved. Let that cool and then put it into their feeder. Super easy. Nothing else is needed in it. Walmart, as well as many other stores, carries a large variety of feeders.
I’ll tell you what…we lived in Florida most of our life and we could not take one more sweltering summer. We moved to upstate NY and people though we were crazy for it but to actually be able to enjoy a spring, summer and fall is incredible! We have learned to appreciate the winter for what it is- a time of rest. Rest for us and rest for nature. 😊
Transparency in all things. If a link is affiliated versus not. Let us know 🙂 some folks find merch to be fun. If it's witty/funny I might go for it 🙂
You get an Amazon store if you wish as ppl like to buy the products you actually use and it may be good for your business. You are a reputable channel good sir. Personally I will be giving up my Prime subscription as their service has gone way down. $139/year, no free delivery from Whole Foods anymore ($9.95 fee now), 2-day delivery is now 8-10 days, and everything is made in China, not the USA. So you’re paying over $10/month for video streaming that isn’t worth it. I will try out your recommendation for IV Organics though. Thanks for the discount code! 😊
I think having an Amazon affiliate link or a shop selling stuff is perfectly fine.
I would buy a Phoebe stuffy if you had it in the merch store. Seriously, it's sweet that you asked, but I love that it's even a possibility to make money this way, nowadays. So do what you want. Do the other youtubers on those teams have garden pets, too? Make a collection to go with Phoebe's stuffy!
Amazon links to gardening products you use is a perfectly acceptable way to generate additional income in my opinion. I would purchase a Black Gumbo T-shirt … would love to see what designs you come up with!
Links are easier for me like the Leonard place you mentioned for mulch. I like your suggestions and trust them. I would buy to support you.
I love lonks from gardeners I love and trust. It helps me find good stuff without digging. Merch is good to. Lets people know what you support. That is a good thing.
My question is do they work for free ? Nothing wrong with making money for your time and expertise. For now it's still a free country and nobody forces them to watch or buy anything. Thank you for making your videos
