South Side Vs North Side: Planning my 2023 Garden Location

Hello everyone! In this video I officially kick off my 2023 garden Zone 5b. The video begins with some seed starting indoors. I am a beginner homesteader and I don’t have my pod delivered yet, where the majority of my growing supplies are. So, I’m going to try the method the previous owner used and attempt to start my seeds in my south facing windows. Today, I get started my tomatoes and peppers and will continue with herbs, cabbage and flowers this weekend.

Next, I take you outside and give you a tour of my 2 major growing areas on the homestead. I’m trying to decide where the majority of my kitchen garden will be. The previous owner grew in the South Side yard, but there are a few upsides (including lots of space) on the North Side as well.

The South Side currently has some existing structure and plantings, that we think might be grapes. Grape growers and could you help me identify? I’ll ask for your advice in the comments. In addition, the South Side is close to the actual kitchen and other outbuildings where organic gardening supplies will be kept.

The North Side has no sun restrictions, but it is where my leach field for my septic system is. I’ve learned that vegetable gardens may not be a great idea over leach fields, but that flowers might do just fine as long as their roots aren’t intrusive. In addition, I’ve got a great set-up for water barrel access.

Come along with me while we talk pros and cons and let me know what you think about those grapes! I can’t wait to get my vegetable garden growing.

  1. Personally I'd keep the grapes and see how they do this year. You can always change your mind next year or at the end of the season if you decide they aren't your thing.

  2. Team Grapes! 🍇 (My hens go bonkers for grapes.)
Is the standing hoop tall enough to walk under or sit in a chair? It would be an awesome little shady summer spot for an afternoon beverage break.
I love the idea of a front flower garden… A field of colorful blooms just sounds gorgeous.

  3. I'm a plus 1 for team keep the grapes! They might be wine grapes. I believe there are a number of home wine makers in that area. I think your first year will be exciting and a discovery year. Have fun! 🌈💖🎉🥂

  4. Flower garden near leach field, gutter on the barn, good luck with the 🦌. Can’t wait to see what you do❤

  5. I’d definitely keep the grapes ☺️ I tend to make myself rules like say this year we’re gonna see what the state of them are as is, but I know I don’t want it growing here and here, so I can get rid of that.

Shade is wear in a new house. I had myself all oriented last spring when we bought so I would know where to plant what and the patterns of sun still surprised me! So much so that I am moving 8x4ft raised beds this year.

Septic bed – I’ve read in permaculture books it’s fine to do food plants as long as it’s not directly touching human waste, so no to potatoes but yes to raspberries and fruit trees etc.

I am super enjoying watching you get started 💕

  6. I vote jeep the grapes the first year and see what they do! Also planting on the leach field is good from what I know… agree with maybe not food but flowers and grasses would be awesome! So excited to see our grow and come to life! 😍😍😍🌸🌸🌸

  7. Yay, what a fun tour!! We inherited some grape vines too – definitely agree pruning back and keeping. Oo, getting excited to see it all transform!
