Planting Natives for Summer Color & Pollinators | Gardening with Creekside

Today I am planning for the heat of summer and planting several natives in the back hydrangea bed that will bring us summer color and support loads of pollinators. One of the keys to a well-developed garden is to have interest throughout the season and of course, use plants native to your region and supporting the pollinators. The four plants that I am using today will do just that!

  1. I planted the Goldstrum Rudbeckia about 30 years ago in my cottage garden behind the house. It’s been blooming ever since then. It’s not invasive but it will multiply. It is one of my favorites.

  2. That giggle and head dip talking about red clay.. know it well lol red clay here too nc 8a…i don't have a power auger, is all done by shovel🤪 3 yrs ago i had to break out a pick axe smh

  3. When, in your entire gardening life, have you ever had a "finished" garden? Always a work in progress and that is why we keep on gardening! Oh the joy of new plants, they will be stunning companions to the Hydrangeas and Jonquils! Thank you for sharing and. oh by the way, we had a 3" of snow in blizzard form Wednesday and another downfall yesterday in Cheyenne, WY. So, if you love the colour white, come on up to Cheyenne, we never disappoint Happy gardening friends!

  4. Good Morning Jenny! Your Daffodils make me want to try them again. I planted some about 40 years ago, they come up and bloomed the first year, 2nd year only foliage and then nothing after that. Therefore, I never tried them again. Have a Blessed Day and stay safe through the thunderstorms that we are supposed to get today.

  5. 🤣😂🤣 I cracked up when you were planting and here comes Brynna with Giant stick! She was helping you clear the area of debris!
What you are doing in this flowerbed is a great example of like you said, envisioning, how you want your space to look. Because that is a large bed and most people can't fill it in one swoop. I'm having to do that in my garden. I take bits and pieces from your wonderful videos and add to mine. The fun part is you're always gardening and having fun!! Looks like you beat the sun too! Yay!

  6. Going to look fantastic. Great. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

  7. So happy that these are plants that I can use in zone 5! Usually you recommend plants I can’t grow.

  8. I'm really into native pants and you are fortunate to have a good supply of these in your area. Native pollinators annd wildlife require these to live and for the gardener the plants don't requiire watering unless you want to collect seeds. In my area it's suggested we have 10% of our yards dedicated to native plants.

  9. Love this video Jenny! Thanks for sharing! I planted Goldstrum & Magnus Echinacea last year & they’ve been great. Another great one would be aster! Mine became huge mounds first year in the ground. Stokes aster has surprised me too small evergreen first year but this year they’re almost 2ft tall already! Now looking for a low border plant to add in front.

  10. Hi Jenny I love your videos and all you do,I have a word of advise I love Brenna so a word of advice please don’t let Brenna eat all does branch sticks ,it is very dangerous little splint may get stuck ,, choke in the throat or intestines this is said by experts ,❤ your channel God Bless

  11. Thank you! This is my plan for gardening this year! Hadn't thought of planting Goldenrod. Please make sure to show us an update when this garden is in bloom.

  12. I have great vision on spaces and I can already see the flowers. I became disabled a few years ago and I have been planting only perennials this year. Its too physically hard on me for annual planting. And you have to have vision for what my gardens will look like later this year and years to come. Love, love your videos.❤

  13. I have a lot of these plants in my basement under grow lights that started from seed .I can't wait to see all of the plants in Bloom in a future videos.
