Japanese Garden

Foreigner Bought an Empty House “Akiya” in Rural Japan Cleaning the Japanese Garden and Renovation

In this video I discuss our plans for the Japanese Garden in our house in Rural Japan which was previously an Akiya. I also give you a quick update on the renovation progress.

I am a foreigner (Mexican American) living and renovating a traditional Japanese house in rural Japan. We bought an old Vacant Japanese house (Akiya). This abandoned Japanese house is in rural Japan. Follow our Akiya house renovation and Japanese countryside living. I bought a JDM Kei truck AKA Japanese Mini Truck to help clean the previous owner’s property and daily Japanese rural living. We travel Japan as much as possible and provide travel tips in Japan.

  1. I have always been interested in the garden and have screen shots of it. To me, the stones and their arrangement are high quality material and design. I'm so glad to see you will tackle the project and bring it back to its intended beauty! I have used a heavy duty reciprocal saw with very coarse blades for cutting out roots more quickly, sometimes, than hand tools. Probably best to remove as much of the roots as possible. I wish I could be there to work with you! The miniature stone garden piece at 4:40 is wonderful. I wish I could find it in a import shop here in the SF Bay Area!
A local, traditional garden designer could name your beautiful tree and maybe offer suggestions to compliment the wonderful stones with flowing water and successful plants. La Chingona will come in handy with this project too! Buena suerte!

  2. You NEED to reclaim the pond and the water fall for moving water in your pond or you have a mosquitos hellhole^^ i would pressurewash the wall behind and next your house and i can imagen in summer siting outside near the pond will be a blast !

  3. If the electrical isn't completed yet buy some pipe up and bury it shallow to the intended lantern locations and have him run wire to a switch inside the house so you can turn it on and off when you like. Probably only a hundred bucks in material but a very cool thing to have. That garden has huge potential and is in a great spot.

  4. Hi, I believe your tree is an Acer palmatum aka Japanese maple. Native to East Asia. Make sure to observe if your tree is blooming during spring time, if not that is one of the indications your tree need some care. If I’m wrong would love to get the correct name for this tree in the next video. 😊
