Sarah Raven – How to grow dahlias | Good Housekeeping UK

Although originally a native of Mexico, dahlias have become a British classic. A few years ago though, they fell out of favour with gardeners who thought of them as an old fashioned, gaudy and time consuming plant their great granddads grew on their allotments.

Fortunately after decades in the doldrums, they are enjoying a revival due to their vast colour range and fantastic flower power – those with single blooms are also a magnet to bees and butterflies. This has made them a real crowd pleaser and popular garden plant.

We visited Sarah Raven’s cutting garden in east Sussex where she grows an incredible range of dahlias.

  5. I just planted 20 tubers in my flower bed, and it's supposed to rain everyday for the next week in Texas. What should I do?

  6. Hi Sarah, I have just taken over the chores needing done in our gardens due to my wife's illness! I see my neighbours gardens full of these glorious colourful flowers which I would like to grow and show in my gardens! When is the best time to plant Dahlias seeds and holy hock seeds? I live in Scotland, so the temperature will differ from down south! Many thanks!

  7. Thank you for sharing your passion on Dahlias ❤️ Just how large is your back yard flower garden ?

  8. I’ve just bought a couple of your Molly Ravens, it’s exquisite, I can’t wait to introduce them to their dahlia friends, I think they’ll be perfect amongst Cafe au Lait.

  9. I have planted dahlias very small plants at the moment they have buds .. should i remove the flower buds until the plants are taller..there that small at the moment they don't need staking.. should I remove flwer buds.. ?? Australia.

  10. Molly Raven is really supreme. Waltzing Mathilda will move to my garden too together with Sarah Raven. .

  11. I planted some dahlias tubers in a border that was bordered by grass. When the tubers produced stems and leaves at 8 inches high I noticed that one of the dahlias was decimated whilst the others were untouched. I threw down pellets and beer traps but caught nothing. I few days later I decided to trim the grass edge as it had overgrown in length and was covering the border. I lifted the grass up to cut it, underneath right by the decimated dahlia I found 20 slugs and a few more next to the next dahlia along. I scissored them in half and learnt my lesson. That dahlia which was left with denuded stems made a comeback and it's buds are about to open 6 weeks late. I couldn't believe it and I'm happy I left it there as I figured I'll use its tubers next year.

  12. Very nice thank you. So if you treat them as perrenials, how cold does is need to get to kill them ? I live at the altitude of 750 m and it gets minus 10 , just 2-3 days a year, but most of the Winter it is less cold. So with a goog lyer of mulch, plus branches, leaves, etc…they will come back the fallowing year ? I will try, thank you.

  13. Snow did in the dahlias, the tubers are now safely in storage…October!!!
All were potted, and I lugged a few of the smaller pots inside.
    Question
What will the effect be of growing the dahlia indoor until spring?

  14. Hi Sarah! Great video! I would love to try to mulch them heavy here in zone 6a/b here in Ohio. I’m wondering if they can winter over in this zone? What zone are you in? Thanks so much!!

  15. 10% mildly useful information, 90% useless snobby drivel. Naming a Dahlia after yourself is second only to the extortionate price of your mediocre brand of seeds when it comes to your nauseating level of self-importance. Rant over.

  16. Great advice re digging them up – DONT! I've really damaged mine (even though I was extremely careful and stored them by the book) and will never lift them again. Yep, just cover them with compost – they can take a lot more cold than we think.

  17. Great video thank you 🙏 just ordered these tubers..Dahlia Procyon – Dahlia Sneezy & Dahlia Sunshine..I need to put these in pots as I have no garden as such (courtyard) First time for me so any info on planting these in pots would be appreciated- Happy Gardening 👩‍🌾
