Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. I think i just had a great idea…..
Truck bed liners as garden beds.
    I think its genius.
They are corrugated at the bottom, raise the back a little so it is sloped for water to run out ,or just naturally do that with the land, stake the back and sides for support fill with your own choice of dirt and boom, a great weedless garden bed.

  2. High carb potatoes & corn poorest choices for the growing many with obesity, diabetes Metabolic Syndrome!
But more greens & grains & healthy weeds can support chickens! Since humans must eat protein & good fat, CHICKENS can easily provide needed balance for healthiest eggs & even meat. If local laws allow a rooster, you’ve enough land for pasture/farming (& you’ve got the stomach for slaughtering for meat) chickens can be a self-sufficiency self-replicating protein supply.

  3. Tomatoes aren't that easy, they so finnicky and prone to get sick. Pumpkins on the other hand, those mfs could survive a nuke.

  4. Funny, all but one (cabbage) of the crops he lists are “new world” indigenous to the Americas. Interesting.

  5. Getting older helps….putting yourself in their shoes makes you see things different.

Problem is, you only realise this when you are theire age yourself.. and then it is too late do do something about it.

Don´t let little issues become big ones. It is not worth it.

  6. A new one to me this year was Caigua. This grows into a really attractive vine, which I had growing up a trellis at the back of a bed. it produces gherkin-like fruit, which, when small, can be eaten raw. They taste like a cross between a snap pea and cucumber. When they get older, (with inedible black seeds which have to be scraped out), they are too tough to eat raw. Surprisingly, they cook up really well, whether baked, or stir fried. Lots of good vitamins etc, and seemed problem free. I'll be growing them again this coming spring.

  7. I see your sky looks funky in this short video. We are getting jet sprayed every day! Every day in Kansas here

  8. Very climate specific. We can't grow a lot of corn or squash where i live, and using space for these crops will take valuable space from things that do perform well.

  9. Massive green thumbs up from me. Specially because I can grow these in Scotland more or less with a success. ❤️

  10. YEAH IN QUEENSLAND!! WHAT DO U RECOMMEND FOR MELBOURNE IN WINTER? BEETROOT, SPINACH, LEEK, POTATO, GARLIC, ONION, CARROT, FENUGREEK, SILVERBEET AND CHARD, RADISH,…

  11. Corn has very little nutritional value I wouldn’t grow it. My guess would be Garlic, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, asparagus, pumpkins, carrots, and to sweeten things up a bit watermelon. That’s what I’m growing to feed my family since here in the states the M R N A is in all our veggies and meat now. Do not eat the food from stores if you come to the USA our Government is poisoning us to death with our food supply. All the restaurants sell you high quality food that they all buy from the lowest quality sellers. Let that sink in. Our food supply is killing us act accordingly

  12. Corn, squash/pumpkin, and beans are great companion plants. I forget the exact reasons why, but something like the corn gives the beans a place to climb, the beans add nitrogen to the soil, and the squash/pumpkin acts at mulch/ground cover to hold in moisture.

  13. Nevertheless you will again starve, because you dont have oil. You should add olives. Also almost all recipes include onions, you can replace pumpkin, nobody eats pumpkin.

  14. As a meat eater. Pumkin leaves is one of my favorite veg. So flavourful bu you need to clean it properly. You can eat the male pumkin flower too. I dont really eat actually pumkin because 80% on market are flavourless

  15. Thanks for your videos, we are from Thailand and want to be self sufficient. Your easy videos are great for us as we are not professional but like to reuse a lot .

  16. Planting some perennial vege is good too, ones that just keep going even when you don't look after them. Jerusalem artichokes are a good one, you'll never get rid of them! Potatoes just keep coming up everywhere as do tomatoes.
