Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. G'day Everyone, that kookaburra still won't leave me alone lol… I'm still working towards going live soon but I just want to make sure the connection etc is solid before I take the plunge this time. As always, I don't ever take your ongoing support for granted and thank you wholeheartedly for watching my videos! Cheers 🙂

  2. Does mint go with pumpkin and eggplant? Why not? I would try a sear and slow roast, something maybe in a tagine or clay pot, use Moroccan spices, finish with fresh chopped mint. Less vegan: chunks of pan seared lamb slow roasted with veggies added halfway or so through. Just saying, if I had those on hand, the vegan version would be something I'd try, add some couscous as a side. 😊

  3. Five task to do everyday in the veggie Garden tomatoes and cucumber are nice veggies to plant I had to learn to plant them and maybe some to Matos it will be nice to make some sauce or plant som sweet potatoes sounds good to harvest some herbs the tomato vine are dying to take over plus ants and lady bus will make the plant sick liquid fertilizer their are many other reasons to look for activity in you garden you can look for all things in your garden good and bad it cann relive stress something that you help create I enjoyed the video cheers

  4. Would you recommend putting cinnamon around the plants? I have heard that this reduces pests and promotes more growth but I'm not sure.

  5. Mark you legend,

I started watching your videos late at night during the graveyard shift at the pub I used to manage while I did the days balancing. I started to say dream about a new way of living my life.

I’ve moved back to the Country – south west NSW, and have just begun to get a little garden going.

Can’t say you’re 100% responsible, but I definitely owe you some measure of Thankyou, because I’m the happiest I’ve been in years mate.

    Cheers brother

  6. @Self Sufficient Me : Of course this is not a thorough video/lecture, but it is good, fine, and " Bon appetit ". You provide quite fine videos at this channel of yours. I do not know it would all work in Quebec, Canada, where I reside in a southern region, but certainly a good amount of what you explain would be good for here.

  7. When I transplant I dig up the soil about two inches around the plant so as to not disturb the roots and this way the plant does not go into shock and die off 🙂

  8. Thanks to you I now have 6 raised beds. One is mostly compost but if something comes up in there I baby it. My tomatoes have grown too tall for me to reach the tops. They had some kind of worms on them that was destroying everything but I think that is under control now. I have a ton of blooms but not as much fruit on those…..Cucumbers completely took over one entire bed. I have already put up over a dozen jars of pickles. I have potatoes in one bed by themselves but they arent doing great. It is almost time to harvest..I hope by watering them daily they will grow a bit more in the next couple of weeks. I have yellow crook necked squash that is doing well and one entire bed of bush beans. I also have garlic, onions, sorrel, spaghetti squash and a few suprises that i have no idea what they are. I have been making own beds out of galvanized steel and 4x4s. They are nothing fancy but they hold dirt. Maybe next year I can do something to make them pretty. I have learned a lot this spring and I know more about what to do and what not to do for next time. Thanks for all of the good information.

  9. The corporate NYSE owned Govts of NSW have made a decree: no more honey bees will be living by 2025. Bees pollinate our food. Huh! so why would they hatch such a dastardly plot? I think some at least know.
    Have a happy day.

  10. I love your videos so much. You had me laughing out loud multiple times. 😂 Thank you for that!
