Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

  1. Love your videos. I’m in northeast Texas and o would love to have apricot trees. I’ve heard they don’t do well here. 😢

  2. Totally get the "not quite the way you wanted it to." Now we just roll with it. And sometimes it works out for the best. Thanks for your time once again. It's greatly appreciated.

  3. Scott. Your yellow wild flower looks like coreopsis to me “tickseed” I’ve planted the pure yellow with black center variety into my front flower garden to give an airy wispy yellow flying flower look.

  4. Can you help with my Brown Turkey fig? It's the second year for it here. My problem/question, it has about 15 branches on it, but they are coming from the center and in the ground? How do I prune it? What do I do to make it grow up? Can't seem to find any information that helps. Thanks for any help at all.

  5. You're a legend Scott. Don't feel bad about time out from the garden or from YouTube. Thanks for all the inspiration. I've been growing food for two years because of your channel. (Tom from Ireland)

  6. Scott I have a question for you, what happen to your acquaintance Praxxus55712 ( Ray ). Mean while You garden looks great I am in the DMV zone 7b

  7. We have a bunch of green anoles here too but I never knew that the ones with the little ridge were females!
I like to let my tomato plants sprawl too, my husband on the other hand likes them tidy so we kind of meet in the middle and we don't prune but we do try to use stakes and tomato cages. 😆🍅
I'm impressed by how good your apples look even though you're in the south like me! We have apple trees too but they always look pretty ugly by the time we harvest them, lol.
It's ok to get busy! We love your channel and appreciate the time to take to share with us. We'll be here when you have time for us again too. 😉 Stay awesome! Thank you for sharing!

  8. Enjoyed the tour. garden looks great. I hope my NorCal garden gets to about that same development in about 2 weeks from now.

  9. I really enjoy watching your channel! I love your “how to” videos and It is very pleasant to listen to your commentaries.

Seeing a serious home gardener deal with the reality of life creating deviations in their plans is wonderful. That’s one of the difficulties we need to deal with and can be so discouraging. Gardening is not about perfection but learning to roll with whatever happens to get the best harvest we can under the circumstances.

Your common sense approach is beneficial to all of us! Thank you for your openness in sharing your experiences so we all can benefit.

  10. Great tour and talk Scott. Awesome to see all your fruit trees, they really do offer folks lots of food for the money and time invested! I graze like a bear on my blackberries, they don't make it to jelly. 😆

  11. Nice to see a video from you Scott. Howto video's are nice, but I just like to watch. I hope the real life issues you are dealing with solve themselves. We know the Lord will work them to your good. I wish I could find a mini stirrup hoe, one with a 2 inch or smaller cutting head. The big one is just to big for containers. Make a video burning out the weeds if you have the time, it should be interesting to see weeds burn. Im still in setup season, but almost finished. Soon it will be watering, weeding, and harvest season. I kind of like it hen the garden is going and all the things I do early make it easier to manage kick in to avoid the heat of the day.

  12. Scott, I have two Fuji apples and a Honey crisp. Do you know when they flower and fruit? I’m in Memphis area

  13. Your garden is looking really good! I have a baby zucchini and hopefully another female was successfully pollinated. Picked the first Roma and have several different cherry tomatoes with flowers. Starting to dry a few herbs for winter use. Here's to a very productive garden season for all of us.

  14. It's good to hear from you Scott! I wouldn't worry about the sprawling tomatoes any. That Texas heat and humidity gonna be here soon enough. by the time disease sets in they'll have done about all they can do anyway! Gotta give you huge credit for turning me on to the Edox tomato. Doesn't seem to like cool weather early in the season but once they take off they are one heavy producer! Hope to see another update on your next project in the garden. I stay sure to not miss a Sunday service at CRBC and i really take away alot having that weekly company.

  15. hi feebie my dog sonnys in a wheelchair in his hurt days he wants to be by me i need a tie out for him

  16. It is fine to take some time off from YouTube , Scott. Your viewers will just wait until you catch up w life. You have been through a lot this past season. Enjoy your garden. More paramount… make and take time for your very own self care!!

  17. Your blackberries look great. I tried growing them but the birds eat them just as they started to ripen. Did that for a couple years and even tried covering with bird netting and that was just too labor-intensive. My corn is over six feet and putting out some good cobs. Growing in south texas can be a challenge. Looking forward to the next video. Have a great night.

  18. Love that you are adding so many flowers to the garden…I have been doing the same, and am just loving all the new birds and insects that have been visiting. Plus flowers make me so happy. Btw,.I am pretty sure that yellow flower with the brick-red center is coreopsis…I have the same one, love it! Have fun! Do a Single seed challenge update sometime!

  19. Hi Scott I hope you’re doing well and having a wonderful week . We’re in the same situation as you-down to one car and no longer have a truck to get compost an soil from a local company that we’ve been using for about 5 years 😢😢 so now just buying extra Heavy duty black bags and filling them up with compost. This week our City had a compost giveaway so I was able to put 3 bags in the back of our Escape . But boy do we miss the truck 😢so I sympathize with you. Idk why but hubby sold his 69 Ford truck last year . Anyways your garden looks great! Well lived in 😊and I love the flowers 🌺 🌸🐝🌷 Take Care of Yourself and Please Stay Safe and Healthy! 🐝🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱As always Thank You for Sharing 💛🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

  20. One of may favorite things to do is wander around my pepper garden at night with a flashlight and find all the lizards hunkered down for the night. Tried rescuing one in one of my rain barrels last night. Hope it made it. Thanks for the tour!

  21. My Muscadines have already overgrown the fencing I made for them but I'm letting them go because they are finally fruiting for the first time. Have you ever made any Greek dishes using the leaves? Was pondering this myself but wondered if you'd done it. We love stuffed grape leaves at our local Greek fest. i have a patch of cilantro and it has reseeded itself year to year several years in a row now. One out of three plums fruited for the first time for me this year, despite all of them being loaded with blooms.

  22. H Scott! I’m in zone 5b Denver area and we’ve had a lot of heavy rain a few weeks ago. The only thing that I’ve harvested is a few bok choy leaves. I’ve been working hard, but everything is still very small.. your garden looks great. Thanks for the tour.

  23. I am doing a hybrid sprawl/trellis for a few tomatoes as an experiment. I have a net trellis going out from the pot at a 45 degree angle. Should be interesting.
