Planting spring onions #gardening #garden #growyourownfood #vegetable #vegetablegardening #farming

My cool season plantings always include a few rounds of spring onions (shallots).they are an easy and durable crop to grow with little maintenance needed to get a harvest of them. The hardest part I find is growing your own seedlings. You need fresh seeds. And they do that a bit of time to germinate and grow to a size suitable for transplant. When I plant them out I wash off all the soil around the bundle of roots and separate the seedlings. I plant them out in groups of 4 and I pinch off a bit of the roots for ease of planting. The seedlings get planted out 10cm apart in rows 15cm apart.

I like to pick my spring onions on the smaller side so they will start to be harvested in 8 weeks.
