LEAF CURLING: How to Interpret UPCURL OR DOWNCURL Drying | Diagnosis Treatment

What Are Your Plants Trying To Tell You?
There are a Lot of articles on internet with various solutions to the problem of leaf curling. Today we will look into different patterns of Leaf curling – like upcurl, downcurl, side curl and so on and also look into the causes and scientific concepts and how to self diagnose and treat the problem of leaf curl.

Well, before I start describing the different patterns of leaf curling, I want to convey a message specially to newbie gardners to stop worrying about it. Its actually simple and easy to treat most of the times. Specially in Organic Gardening, you will never get those picture perfect plants. So stop worrying and look at the plant as a whole and just one or two leaves getting curled or yellow or having some holes and things like that, stop worrying too much about it.
There are lot of articles on internet on leaf curl listing out lots of reasons like magnesium deficiency and so on and you tend to start supplements or over fertilize your plants without knowing the pattern of curling or without performing a DIAGNOSIS of leaf curling. Here in this episode, I will guide you and show you different patterns of leaf curls with scientific concepts, causes for each of these and solutions for each pattern.
Similar to diagnosing human disease by evaluating signs, symptoms and investigations and then narrowing down the diagnosis, this can be applied in plants as well by examining the pattern of leaf curl. When you see leaf curls, the first thing you should know is the PLANT IS IN STRESS. Stress is more commonly seen in younger plants than the more established ones.

  5. Teleologically speaking, Downward curl from xs sunlight or underwatering is the plant's defense against losing even more water from underleaf cells. It curls down to shield its respiratory cells from evaporation from direct heat, or further water loss from partial pressure of air around leaves while its roots have no water supply to replace it . The underleaf cells are closing shut to restrict further loss, and when shut they decrease the area under the leaf, causing curling down. When its water supply is restored, it abandons its self preservation mode and re-opens for business again.

Upward leaf curl is a vein or protective coating issue, where the vasculature on top is retracted (foreshortened) and decreasing exposure area on top of leaves. It could also be shrunken leaf coating from heat creating a microscopic 'crackling', or nutritional damage failing to replace waxy upper coat after sun damage, causing the leaf to 'wrinkle up' due to shrunken top cells. Also, if the plant is experiencing a kind of 'suffocation' (from perhaps smog, dust or packaging) it will also curl up, to further expose respiratory cells underneath, trying to breathe better.
