  1. I live in the desert so water conservation is very important. Can a plastic liner be placed at the bottom so that the water doesn't run. Our soil is clay and rocks. Intend to make my boxes with bricks which were left by the previous owner. Thank you for all the info.

  2. I am limited by where I can put my raised beds so they will have to be at least 100 feet from the nearest spigot. Is it possible to run a line that long or do you have any alternatives I can do to keep the beds watered?

  3. Use a cover crop during winter, this way it feeds the soil during the winter keeping it living soil ready for you at spring. This will keep it from compacting too.
You are allowed by creation to step on the soil, that is not what the problem is with your compaction problems. You have compaction problems because you have bare soil sitting there all winter being killed off, and that is how and why it begins compacting, because it died. Always keep a cover on the soil and it will feed the microbes and keep you beneficial creatures like worms alive and thriving. A living cover is what nature does if you leave it alone, because it is intelligent it knows it needs a cover. So, if you sit there ripping the cover off and letting it sit like that over winter it will kill everything you tried to gain.

I only mention this because you said you did this in fall, and you could plant a cover crop then too.

  4. If your going to just screw them together like that then there is no need for a post. Only time the post is needed is if your screwing right into the post from each board. If your going board to board then it's not needed.

  6. Many thanks for your video. It gave me good ideas on how to install my first raised bed for tomatoes. Regards from Peru-Chile.

  7. for snuffing out the grass, i prefer using cardboard material. it degrades quickly and helps leave the existing soil life in place.

  8. I've been using above ground beds for about 15 years. One thing that helps: paint the boards, ESPECIALLY the exposed grain ends, and BEFORE assembly so you get coverage at the joints. They look nicer, and I think you get about double the life. Irrigation: I use a dual-level system. I drill a 3/4 hole in the box side, about 1/3 from the bottom. I run 5/8 main (valve at the entrance to the box if you want to isolate) into the box, tee to each side, elbows along each side (all this 1/3 from bottom). I then connect 1/4 drip tube (integral weep holes) alternating in stripes from the two sides, covering the layer; again, 1/3 from bottom. In each corner I put an above ground 90 degree sprayer, adjustable, with a spray range long enough to cover the size of the bed. When first planting, I use both the above ground sprayers, and the lower (future root) matrix is always active. After the plants have rooted, I turn off the above ground sprayers, leaving only the below ground root system with water. This reduces evaporation, and also discourages surface weeds.

  9. Question regarding the drip lines running the length of the bed. When looking at a 1' square of carrots, how does a single line water the square?

  10. What do you do to winterize this system and ensure the freezing weather doesn't cause any damage to the systen?

  11. Hi Tim, I loved the video, thank you! My question is, can I hook this system up to my existing sprinkler system for the lawn? If so, do I need any extra parts (pressure regulator, extra connectors, etc?). For me, that would be the best solution, but I am just unsure how to connect it to the sprinkler system. Thank you in advance!

  12. Hello, great video, how long do you suggest running the soaker hose? Is there an equation based on square footage?

  13. Great video!

I'm from Edmonton Alberta Canada and it's a much colder climate than perhaps what you have. What do you suggest for our cold Winters as far as draining the lines so they don't burst?

  14. Do you ever add Gopher barriers ? If we are growing carrots , should we add a barrier ? Haven't seen
    them around in years .

  15. You know what would be a great video?

Not the installation of drip irrigation but best uses of drip: where to place, how long to run, whatever else…

I’ve seen a bunch of videos on installations but little on just the simple use of them. If anyone can direct me to that… have at it.

  16. Thank you so much!!!!! I love the drip works website and cannot wait to place an order for my garden beds. Amazing! YES!!!!

  17. Such a helpful video! I was wondering if this drip system can be set up using existing irrigation lines? I currently have a system that is set up to water my lawn using 3/4” pvc. Is the drip line something I can use an adapter close to my garden beds? Or would I have to run a new line across the yard where my Valve box is to be able to have drip?

  18. Nice work. I live in Michigan what's the best way to drain the tubes before freezing πŸ₯Ά thanks

  19. I wish you showed the parts needed for actually running everything from the hose faucet. That's the part that seems confusing to me – the timers and backflow preventer and all that.

  20. I’m so jealous of your natural soil. Here in CO I have soil that can only be described as rock hard clay. My husband and I broke two trenching shovels just trying to put edging in. So with such atrocious natural soil, should I double the height of these beds? I’m afraid the roots will hit the natural soil like a terracotta pot.

  21. I live in zone 6B. During the winter we are frequently in the single-digits Fahrenheit. Will these hoses crack during the winter? I thought I would need something that I can remove them take anymore during the winter.

  22. I’m wondering about winter and potential freezing of the buried irrigation lines. Is this something I should be concerned about?
    Thanks for the great video!

  23. How would I shut off and drain the system before winter sets in, please? Also, can all the lines stay put in winter? Do they need to be protected or buried deeper in Nova Scotia? Many thanks for your great video!

  24. I stopped watching and will move on because as soon as you made the false comment about pressure treated wood I knew you were full of shit.
