Front Yard Market Gardening: Changing Seasons With New Crops!

The best part of gardening in Florida is that it means year-round abundance! If you are new to the tricky summertime conditions of growing fruits & veggies in the sunshine state – a little bit of advice: those directions on your seed packs don’t apply here like they do in more temperate climates. The high heat & humidity are great for certain crops, but trying to grow tender annuals will always end in failure. Instead, many of those favorite European crops do best in our temperate winters.

This is part of the reason Jim spends the winter season in Florida & summers in Maine every April – October for the past decade. Every summer Jim cover crops his garden beds (aka front yard) with a mix of sweet potatoes & black-eyed peas. This offers a couple benefits:
1. The obvious yield of calorie-dense food between the tubers & the leaves
2. The sprawling sweet potato vines quickly cover with a thick layer of “living mulch” providing shade, moisture & weed control, while leaving letting his “beds sit fallow”

Which brings us all to this phase – the “in-between.”
What does Jim do first when he travels back to his winter home & worksite?
It’s time to harvest the last of the sweet potatoes, then clear & prep the beds for the next rotation of delicious ingredients!
