  2. I find hilarious once again the fact that the first 5 (out of 7) minutes of this video one adult man explains adult ppl how to read numbers. Imperial so imperial.
    It’s a good video, tho.

  3. I once hired a helper that said he could read a tape that learned how from a siding crew….every number I gave him to cut came back really long. It wasn't until the cut came back over an inch long I had him show me how he read the tape. He would only count the marks that indicated that number, skipping the other marks. So for 5/16 he counted 5 of the 1/16 marks, which for the rest of us is 9/16. For 3/8, he only counted the 1/8 marks so it would be 5/8… I couldn't even get mad, to him it made sense. Also, I just want to say that…saying strong or long may be the next 1/16 to carpenters, but for us tile setters it's between the lines, so it would be more like a 32nd.

  4. I'm living proof of the consequences of NOT wearing hearing protection. That ringing in the ears is deafening and frustrating

  5. We in the UK use both. Just depends on the application. Estimating larger lengths we'd use imperial. But finer measurements we'd use metric. But not from the same drawing obviously.
Alot of builders still use imperial, I'm a metalworker predominantly and we use metric most of the time.

  6. Who do you think you are-? To tell someone you Must learn the metric system- I would love to be about 20 years younger and be on a job sight- and I wouldn’t give a Tinkers Damn if you were my boss. I’m 66 and yes that confuses the Hell out of me, I am NOT going to learn that now, For What, Why ? Who Cares. I’ll be dead before America ever thinks about changing over. They tried that Crap before- and it didn’t fly. I doubt it will change before I’m dead, then I won’t care, because I’ll still come back and haunt you on Halloween- Wow-👻

  7. I call it a tape line – that’s what my grandfather taught me and that Man was Never wrong- I know the difference- but to me it’s a tape line-

  8. Now if my old eyes can focus on the little marks I'll be all set. Good plug for hearing protection. Should have used ear protection years ago. Great video.

  9. Back in the day when I started carpentry knowing how to use the tape was something your Dad taught you and the first job I got the first thing the foreman got me to do was build a proper saw horse,if you couldn't do it to his satisfaction you didn't get the job.The worst part for me is I live in Canada and when we switched to metric it was a real pain in the butt.

  10. I worked building sets for TV for two years if you plan on gettiing into set construction you have to use 32nds and 64ths they are so picky because evetything shows up on screen.

  11. The prestressed concrete company i worked for had a couple of 140' long 100,000# beams rejected by QC for being 1' short. Turns out the 200' tape had been made starting at 1' instead of 0'.
Upon further investigation with the manufacturer, it was discovered that a disgruntled employee had made it wrong on purpose. The company paid for the beams (through insurance I'm sure).

  12. 5 7 8
    5 13 16
are very close together. Just one "line" away from each other. As someone outside the US using the metric system, this "inch system" would give me a headache every single time. 😉

  13. That was a very clear explanation for adults who have for some reason not quite "Got It" – Well done, always worth explaining stuff properly. But at nearly 70 I grew up in a UK that taught you all this at primary school. Later we went metric, so sixteenths, tenths, thirtysecondths mm, half mm – we even had thirds of an inch, all on the standard wooden classroom ruler – so I'm not phased by any of them. What I can't understand is what happened in the world so that people born after me, did not get the same standard of education?
I mean, the world I entered also had 240 pennies to the pound, along with half pennies, farthings, threepenny bits, sixpenny bits, shillings, florins, half crowns…all of the kids in my class coped with that – what went wrong?

  14. America, the only country where you need to study to read a measuring tape xD – metric: 3.1cm or 31mm – Imperial: 2 11/18 muliplied by Pi and divided by the moonphase on a monday at 1pm

    🤣

  15. We use imperial in the UK, but the tapes usually have both imperial and metric units, one on each side of the tape.

  16. Sorry, you did not eliminate much of the math, you just used it properly. When math is used properly, it is elegant – not a shortcut.

I love your videos. But beware – no math – no woodworking. You would be amazed at the number of people who don't realize they are using math.

  17. I use the 1/4 marks as reference to know which 1/16 I’m am at. Also it’s good to be able to convert to decimal equivalents for easier computation. Sometimes in my head I am saying the fraction and the decimal just to make sure I’m staying on top of things.
