MIgardener: We Wanted to Find The BEST Growlight Anyone Can Buy at A HARDWARE STORE (What We found Shocked us!)

We went to our nearest hardware store and looked at all the lighting options to find the best growlight possible for the money that anyone could find. We spent over 2 hours there, and looked at hundreds of possibilities. But what we found at the end shocked us all.

  1. It’s important to remember that fluorescent lights degrade over time, becoming dimmer. The more often you turn them on and off, the faster they degrade.

  2. Thank you! Could you also talk about distance from plants and if there’s a method to on/off time and anything else to consider in set up?

  3. I bought the 10-pack Barrina stoplights, 5000LM, 5000K, for like $19.99 on Amazon 2 years ago. Then a month later when I tried recommending them they were like $160. I just checked and they're on sale for $107. I wonder why the price hiked so much a month after getting them. 🥴

  4. More confused than before I watched the video. I may need to rewatch to understand what I'm actually supposed to get.

  5. Thanks for great info. I’m expanding this year. I have a great 400sf bomb shelter that is constant temp. In your grow room do you use tables or rack shelves?

  6. Awesome video!
How about showing a How To on propagating plants in our garden for next year's seedlings.
I'm currently keeping Amish & Cherry tomatoes suckers alive, from plants i grew from your organic seeds last May in my garden. Some have actually produced fruit when the roots got b so massive, I fed them hydroponics solution!!

  7. I got an LED grow light that hangs from Lowe’s. I hung it on command hooks under our upper kitchen cabinets!
I am growing rose cuttings and starting lettuces to put out in the greenhouse beds.
Thinking I’m going to start cabbage and broccoli again bc the pests got the first batch.

  8. Great advice as always, thank you. But you are doing a lot of upspeaking? Every phrase? And every sentence is a question?

  9. I am watching now and hope my question on lights will be address. If not I am looking for good light for my indoor meyor lemon (2) and key lime. I dont want to spend lots of money. I see stand lights which would be good but dont know what to be looking for. The ones I see on amazon have all been led.

  10. This is helpful information. I some things growing indoors right now but plan on starting more plants soon. Thank you for the information!

  11. I'm in the absolute worst growing region, zone 3. We barely have summers to grow anything. So I bought a few AC Infinity small LED grow domes for black friday week discounts. Came out less than a year ago, I believe. Wanted to blaze through tomato, pepper, squash and other seeds quickly because we still have snow or ice on the water the first day of spring. Yes I could have gone a lot cheaper, but had to get gardening numbers up immediately. I've still planned out using cheaper options like the hardware store for future endeavors. But also looking to build a big lean-to with a clear cover for germination warmth, maybe find black bricks to retain sun heat. I'm not expecting 2024 to be anything less than a massive supply upheaval and power outages. Bought a ton of seeds and fertilizer from MIgardener. Saving over half the seeds for future years growing.

  12. Great video idea. This is why you are a leader in the GardenTube community. Instead of selling an expensive product you showed everyone what to look for at a hardware store.

  13. We’re in Michigan. Marijuana is legal. I had a friend of my sons give me a huge grow light that he was no longer using, holy crow! My seedlings did so good last spring, I had to up-pot 4 times before I could plant in the ground! They were just like the ones you showed at the end.

  14. For those curious:
Minimum lumens – 2000 lumens @ 6-8” above the plant. The more lumens the better.
    Minimum kelvin – 5000k ideal 6500k

  15. This was very useful & timely as I'm doing layouts of an aquaponics system in my basement and as a part of the setup will be garden walls that'll be rather close together, your descriptions gave me better ideas in lighting that'll fit that setup.

  16. We have a room with sky lights that we use and we’re thinking about putting led lights in as well. In Columbia Missouri. Thoughts?

  17. I was looking at that exact light, the last one, for my use. I would like to ask if it would go all the way through harvest for a project I am doing. I talked Kersten, (spelling) Friday and she has my number in MN. I want to buy some seeds from you as well after Christmas

  18. Oh this is fantastic help! I've always been intimidated and confused by grow light options. Im in a small apartment in the city and patio gets no sunlight. Only downside I see with the high bay lights are it could become a cat swingset 😂 as my kitties are just so curious if they could make a perching spot from anything lol! But the smaller low bay one I could maybe do something with that. My cats like nibbling leaves so Id have to have a shield or something to protect the plants and make sure i dont grow anything that would hurt them just in case they got into it! For now community garden is good option.

  19. Sam's Club sells 4'led plug in, chainable shop lights for about 20 bucks that are 5000 lumens and 5000 Kelvin. 2 fit side by side on a standard shelving unit, so 10,000 lumens per shelf.
