How To Grow Zucchinis In Containers

Growing Zucchinis and Squash In Containers Or Pots Is Easy! Although very large plants, Zucchinis, or Summer Squash, actually have quite shallow root systems in relation to their size. They are quite easy and most definitely fun to grow in large pots or containers!

In this video, I’ll show you how I obtain my Zucchini starter plants in the spring and how I then pot them up into 5 gallon pots to grow on my patio or deck.

Zucchinis are a large, summer plant that needs full sun and a quality organic mix to grow properly….but beyond that, they are maximum producers and a modern staple in every backyard garden!

  3. Hello Jeff, Can I use cut newspaper for mulch or combine with clippings of grass. I can’t find any straw here, California thank you again 🙏🏻😇🥰

  4. What would be the reason my zucchini is coming in slender and smaller? I’m growing in 10 gallon containers?
I use fish emulsion to fertilize every 2 weeks

  5. Hi, I’ve just been given one of these young zucchini plants, is it right you have to self pollenate the plant ? Many thanks.

  6. So I bought an aerogarden like device on 6/2 my zucchini took off like gangbusters. I had to repot into some dirt as it was becoming too top heavy and would've snapped and died if I left in the hydroponic situation. Its still growing great! About to repot it again as its growing too fast! Will pick up some mulch and a 5 gallon pot tomorrow

  7. Hello, a bountiful thank you for your informative and well-organised channel.
I'm so happy to be planting zucchini/courgettes as the ones from the local market get badly pocked and scarred from the bulk transport and handling!
My plants have put out about 6 healthy leaves so far after growing for 25 days in yoghurt pots (dark green variety) though the leaves are not as big (about 2 inches span) as I've seen in videos. The stem has become a bit leggy and curved but I'm not too worried about that as I know I can bury that part to keep it sturdy when I plant them out.
The thing is , should I plant them out now or can I afford to wait a week or so longer before I transplant to the full-size container? There appear to 4-5 other leaf buds on the plants too.

  8. I have raised beds with drip lines in them so w/your way of laying everything on top of the bed, should I pull my drip lines up before laying the newspaper down, planting & then mulch on top? In the past I always have planted mounds w/about 3-5 seeds in the mound. I'm going to try this way for '22. I just need to know what to do with the drip lines installed. They use to be soaker hose but they kept exploding no matter how much we turned the line down. Thank you in advance for your answer.

  9. Hello please any reason why the Zucchini was planted on the side instead of the middle? maybe I can apply my learning

  10. My god, my zucchini seedlings look so poor compared to these. Started them indoors and they grew so slowly. Probably too cold and gloomy here in sprin in Eastern Ontario. We tried to help it by turning on a heater and a grow bulb, but they just look so sickly. Leaves yellowing, drying and falling off, barely any leaves but already flowers, very tiny still after nearly 2 months…

  11. I have a pergola do u think I could attach string to the top of pergola and put a garden staple at bottom so it climbs up forming a wall if I put many pots across ? Or is butternut squash better? Does zucchini climb?

  12. Dont forget to eat the zucchini flowers!! Yummy dip in flour then beaten egg with parmesean cheese salt pepper n fry

  13. Zucc. roots get very think and rope like. If you choose to do them in containers, make sure it is a deep, deep pot. We planted a separate patch 3 ft. from main garden…and they crept into the main garden and hurt our bush(174) green beans. Zuccs are like watermelon….they spread….A LOT.

  14. Do bush types or vining types take up less space in containers? Which one of these two do you think is easier to take care of?
Do cucumbers or zucchinis produce more food for each plant?

  15. Since I have reckless neighbors who don't understand good gardening hygiene, I have had to deal with Squash Vine Borers for many years. Despite your admonition to get them planted early, I waited this year until the adult moths died out and planting in July. In the meantime, zucchini are cheap at the store this time of year, so no real loss. Regarding early planting, it's often easy enough to get two crops in a season.

  16. That "potting mix" you used looks like pure peat moss. Also, you get better, even moisture if you premix the potting mix and water before potting.

  17. I have been growing for nearly half a century and I keep learning! I recently downsized from an acreage to a small village lot with no soil to start with, so containers save the season. That whole thing about zucchini liking to grow in a direction, I always thought it was something I did wrong! Nice to know it is normal and should be planned for.

  18. I love these videos, but very few, if any, tell you how much sun the seedlings/plants need. Probably the most important fact for new gardeners. Pity!

  19. My zucchini are turning yellow when they're only about 3 in long and none of them have grown large and it's July..

  20. New veggie gardener here…so how do we contain, or maintain really, the amount large of growth typical for a zucc plant? Trellis, prune, do nothing? Was hoping for some more info on that with regards to container planted zuccs.

  21. thank you for the video but i really wish there was more uptalk in the video because it sounded aggressive.

  22. You gave me hope, lol everyone else just says how hard it is to grow them. I started late in the season.
