A 4 week old (young) tomato transplant going out later into warmer soil will easily catch up to an 8 week old (larger) transplant put out too early in colder soil. Warm weather crops prefer warm soil for their roots.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN
As a beginner gardener, this information is so good to know. Thanks.
U truly amazing with all information u give thank u 🙏 🇨🇦
….plus a lotta extra work, time and possible preventable grief getting them out too early for lost cause. I in southern new england ..i cheat with 6 plants to get mid June, "first in neighborhood" tomatoes and they in containers/buckets I can bring inside in a pinch or sheltered warm spot i can protect …rest go out end first week May. ……I plant spares and stagger start them all over last 3 weeks in march "just in case" too ..friends get the extras
I'm in Seattle and I finally got this through my stubborn head — I've been planting tomato seeds too early indoors, on March 1st. The plants struggle significantly when placed in cold soil.
Now I plant tomato seeds indoors between April 1 and April 28. When they are transplanted into the garden in May they start growing right away because the soil is much warmer.
I do, however, plant tomato seeds on March 1st for my greenhouse-grown plants.
How much earlier could you plant if you are using a floating row cover or plastic covered raised beds?
Are you and Cali Kim going to another grow off this year?
That was so helpful and I'm guilty of every year trying to sit out to early
Solid, just wait to start, it only takes a month to have garden ready plants, I hate to start with stunted sets.
Gary, it seems that you are comparing 2 extremes. An 8 week seedling planted in cold soil, versus a 4 week seedling planted in warm soil. What about an 8 week seedling planted into warm soil? Does a smaller seedling have an advantage over a larger seedling if they are both planted into warm soil?
Your local extension office might also have lists when and at what temp to sow crops. Its worth looking into.
Have you tried using soil warming cable for earlier plantings? I might give it a try in one of my raised beds to see how it works. I keep detailed notes on my tomato yields, so I will have a good idea if it helps.
I’ve always been confused about the concept of days to maturity being defined as starting the day you either sow a seed or transplant a starter. How can a transplanted starter plant (assuming that it’s planted in the correct time of year) take just as long as a planted seed would to produce its fruit? 😵💫
