Jarrariums

How do you know if it’s safe to seal a jarrarium (and when to do a water change)?

I would love to put the lid on my jar to keep debris out (and any flying adults from escaping), but is it really producing enough oxygen on its own, and won’t other less desirable gasses build up? I only managed to get this one plant from my water source, plus one tiny sprout of something that looks like grass. There’s also algae (of course). Is this enough to sustain a closed system? Or should I go look for more plant diversity?

Bonus question: will a soil test kit work for testing the water (pH and NPK), and are there any other signs that it may need a water change?
