I have good luck using a layer of burlap above the screen and wrapped down around the side to the bottom. It helps wick the water up to the soil. I would only recommend if you are planting water intensive plants.

Aquasoil. Great in terrariums. My modified abg mix is the best i have used in the past 16 years. Its 1/5 aquasoil 1/5th tropica nutrients for aquariums 1/5th. Orchid bark 1/5 sphagnum moss( i prefer cutting half of it into a semi fine powder) and 1/5th coco fiber.
