Japanese Garden

This Japanese Garden Was LOST For 50 Years!

Earlier this month, we travelled down to Surrey and spent the day in the gardens at Gatton Park with the Head Gardener Dan Ryan.

Next month, they are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the restoration of the Japanese Garden on the site after it was lost for almost 50 years.

we’re down here in the in the Japanese
garden which is uh a garden that we’re
due to be celebrating our 25th
anniversary of restoration just coming
up in April it was originally uh
commissioned by Jeremiah Coleman the
great mustard man in the early 1900s
before the restoration process you
wouldn’t have been able to see anything
here behind you it would have been
completely overgrown the water was uh
and and the ponds were completely gone
the garden isn’t an authentic Japanese
garden per se but has those elements
that you’d expect to see in a Japanese
garden has the bridge it has the flowing
water it has lanterns and acers and
things like that and that’s what gives
it its character looking after the
garden is a privilege seeing it develop
over the last you know my time here
we’ve come a long way in the last 25
years since the restoration of the
garden and hopefully that will carry on
right into the future and it will be in
in safe hands going
forward
