  1. I have been given a few spruce twigs to harvest pollen from. After harvesting the pollen, I left the twigs in water. They started to push out their needles, and it turns out that one of the twigs has much paler needles than the others. I would love to be able to save this twig, but I am not sure exactly how to do that in the best way. I live quite far north, so spring is late and most of the spruce and the area are just in the past week started pushing out their needles while a few haven’t yet.

Should I try to graft it (we live in the forest so I can easily find a tree to graft to) or try rooting hormones? It is only a few millimeters thick.

Rooting conifers takes forever. I’ve had some pine and spruce going for about 6 months, they’ve probably got another 6 months before they root. That’s with hormone too.

Since it takes so long there’s lots of opportunity for things to rot if they get too close to the substrate.

In general I like to preserve pine and spruce and the like by putting them in glycerine/water mixed together. After a day or so you’ve got a nice 3d preserved specimen
