Gardening With Japanese Maples ~ Simple Landscaping Ideas That Enhance Your Garden

Sometimes we can overthink or complicate our garden landscape ideas. Most of the time it is the little things that make the biggest difference. Today I wanted to share a very basic simple landscaping idea I had to enhance our garden of Japanese Maples. With some landscaping stone I no longer needed originally purchased to create a fire pit, I created some rings around several Japanese Maples I wanted to highlight and feature in my garden. Also filling inside the rings with a dark colored mulch, I was able to create a dynamic look to highlight these beautiful Japanese Maples. Come check out our latest project.

[Music] hello everyone welcome to North Carolina living appreciate you tuning in to our channel uh we spend a lot of time Outdoors a lot of times we’re in the mountains hiking around in the beautiful North Carolina mountains or we’re spending time out in our garden in the backyard and uh we’re trying to create a beautiful landscape here I’m out here working all the time today it’s a beautiful spring morning and the birds are singing the sun is shining and uh I’d had a couple ideas today of some things I had laying around that I needed to use and I was trying to find you know kind of an interesting way to use some of the uh scrap material that I had left uh to create a little bit of different uh Dynamics in the garden I wanted to show you a couple of things that I had going on today I think they turned out pretty cool I’ll just show you the progress on one of them and then show you what the others turned out to be but I appreciate you tuning in so let’s check it out welcome to the Garden everyone I wanted to give you a video today about just an idea that I had this morning and uh I came out here and I started working on it I’ve got a couple of them done I thought man they look so good let me just make a video about it just a very simple basic Garden landscaping ideas that can make some big impacts and uh really create some Dynamic uh in your garden especially when you’re talking about individual plants and and just the way you uh kind of outline and create designated and defined areas in your garden so what we’re looking at right here is a absolutely beautiful Acer palum Kuro Heime this thing is a stunning dwarf Japanese maple uh some of the craziest beautiful colors you get these like really uh bright pinks when it first leaves out continues that pink highlight but then when you get kind of underneath it you get these kind of blue green olive green colors underneath with that pink highlight on top absolutely stunning uh Japanese maple I highly recommend this cultivar it’s a dwarf and this is a a very large and mature size especially for this particular tree um so it can fit in a lot of different Landscapes and a lot of different spaces I’ve got this in full sun here in North Carolina we’re in zone 7 7B uh it’s handling like a champ really enhances the color on that too the more sun you give it um but one of the things I’ve been getting to the point of now that I have a ton of stuff planted is I need to start mulching around each of my trees and creating different bedded areas uh my plan is is that not each tree would be individually mulched but uh there would be sections and beds created with groupings of trees but then there would be a few trees that I would like to mulch individually so they kind of stand out on their own and this is definitely one of them so I had some leftover Stone from a fire pit idea and I think I have enough I just have a few here for the video I think I have enough to create a nice ring around this beautiful dwarf Japanese maple caime I’ve got some leftover bags of moltz that I used for the front yard we did some beds up by the front porch and I so I was just trying to be resourceful and today I I didn’t feel like going anywhere really going and picking up any materials and I was out here just kind of enjoying the garden and I had this idea come up and I said hey let’s let’s try to use that and see if we can’t make something cool so I’ll go through the process with you and just show you how a little bit of of just simple Hardscape and landscaping ideas can create a beautiful Dynamic and uh really enhance a section or a tree in your garden so come along check it out all right so I had to get down here on the ground so I can get this project started uh the first thing I’m going to do is really get into that circular uh position around the tree out to about the drip line of the tree and really weed it really well I want to try to fight back a lot of that grass and weeds that are kind of creeping up towards the base of the tree they take a lot of the moisture uh in the ground out and it kind of competes in root systems with the Japanese maples Japanese maples have a very shallow root system so you kind of want to try to keep that grass and weed away from the base of it at least in that drip line area uh because you know they going to be a lot of competition for the moisture that the plant the tree needs the grass is going to soak a lot of that up so I want to try to get the weeds pulled out all the grass pulled out along that circular base of the tree and so I can get in there and start to to begin the process all right we’ve got it pretty good here I wanted to get the weeds pulled out as many as I could it doesn’t have to be completely perfect The Mulch will shade that out and start killing off those weeds but I wanted to pull the majority of them out but we’re about ready to start lining up the stone around this beautiful tree and I I think I have enough Stone left over to complete this circle I may have to adjust how wide this circle is depending on what my Stones wind up being as far as the circular size [Music] d [Music] okay so man this is looking really nice this uh gray stone is really popping against this pink and I’ve got some dark uh black mulch that I’m going to fill in there as well I think it’s going to create a really nice contrast um this stone that I’m using is just some leftover stone that I had from a fire pit idea uh we wound up getting the maple Chima out of metal so we didn’t need need these Stone to do our fireplace out in the garden and so now I was like man I think I got a cool idea for it I hope you guys are enjoying this let’s get this thing mulched in and I’ll show you just how Dynamic a simple cheap you know Landscaping idea can turn a tree into a beautiful [Music] showpiece woo man I’m telling you this thing is looking even more beautiful than it did before there’s just a little bit of extra something that makes it stand apart now and uh I really needed to get this tree mulched in I had mulched it last year but the weeds had taken back over that Mulch and uh it was past due time to get this thing mulched in so that it could really have a a beautiful growing season spring is in full swing and I can’t wait to just watch this thing take off this year and really put on a show it’s already putting on a show right now and I think this just accentuates all these beautiful colors and characteristics of this Japanese maple I got Mr Turtle here hanging out with me I hope you guys enjoyed this video today I wanted to share a few simple garden landscape techniques and ideas that create a dynamic presence in your garden all right so we just finished up with the Acer palatum kurohime this thing is looking sweet right now in the garden that little accent of the stone and mulch really made this thing pop I’ll show the the other ones that I got finished earlier come over here and check this out this is a beautiful dwarf Japanese maple this is Acer palum red panda uh just a little bit of stone and that dark mulch making that beautiful pink red color just pop right here in the garden I really needed to get this one done because I wanted to protect this cultivar this is a rare one right here Acer palum red panda now I’ve got another one right over here I did earlier come check it out this is a very very special tree this is Acer Shir Saum senu a beautiful upright it’s got a nice Leaf that’s kind of a matur style beautiful shape on this one too I really love it and I needed to get this one moled in too because this is a feature plant I’ve got this one in a good size compared to some of the others I have in my garden so adding that nice little Stone ring and the mulch really made this stand out I’m excited about what we accomplished today and I appreciate you guys coming along and checking it out with me thanks for all the comments and everything the participation on our channel it’s been great we’ve got a ton of new subscribers we really appreciate that and we’re always trying to come up with new ideas coming out in the garden and sharing with you guys so until next time take [Music] [Music] care all I want to [Music] so long so long why you keeping [Music] me I I

  1. Looks nice Bryan. My house looks like it’s been invaded by a gang of Casper and his friendly ghosts. I had to cover all my young Japanese maples with netting to protect them from the cicada hatch. I need to leave them on till mid June. The trees look a lot better without a bag over them. 🙂

  2. Good morning Bryan and Frances! Such a stunning tree! What you did looks AMAZING!! I love it!! Ya'll have such a beautiful and well kept garden. You can see the pride and passion in what you do. How large is your property? 💜

  3. I’m gonna copy you. You showed me the kurohime when I was buying mine at open house. Please forgive me. Now I just need a red panda so… 😉

  4. Looks awesome. All your trees are lovely. I have a question as a novice. How deep should I put the mulch around my trees?

  5. Thank you for your instructional video. Very nice look. However, I do have in question: I know you haven’t created mulch volcano on your trees, but I was always instructed to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk. I noticed you mulched right up to the trunk. Is that not a concern or have I been misinformed?

  6. We put the stone around our trees in the yard too. It is easier to trim around the base and keep the Bermuda grass out of it. Rule Garden is looking great!

  7. It is a misconception that grass pulls water away from the roots of trees. The root systems of trees are large and aggressive and once established, do not need supplemental watering (in most cases). Grass roots on the other hand are much shallower and prone to even mild drought.
Also, your tree is planted too deep to be mulching in the way you are. Keep the root flare of the tree exposed to air and not covered by soil and/or wood mulch.

  8. Great idea! Looks really nice with the black mulch. Hope that my new Kuro hime will also get such gorgeous colors.
