part of the program you can certainly do that by sending us an email to gardent talkradio gmail.com that’s gardent talkradio gmail.com or you can give us a call 247365 we’ll call you back with the answer to your question that number is 1 800 927 show that’s 1 1800 927 7469 well before we get in the program Holly it’s time for this week’s joke of the week yeah so the joke of the week is I read a novel about a guy who a small garden not much of a plot bom boom chick boom chicka boom boom yeah this week’s uh Garden joke is brought to you by rescue.com americanmade rescue produ products keep your family home and yard protected from pest insects like wasp Hornets Yellow Jackets F fire ants and more learn more rescue.com that’s rcu.com so edible landscape we talk about growing things in our garden however edible landscaping is a unique way to grow and do other in a way in which is not I guess conventional or traditional or uh oh there’s a garden so that type of mindset yep so edible landscaping it’s the use of food plants or edible plants is designed features in a landscape so the plants are there for the aesthetic value as well as consumption so it’s using things to to grow to look pretty but also to eat um so there’s definitely some some pros to it it’s an easy way to connect with the food you eat without committing to a whole vegetable garden so you could tuck some kale into a flower bed so and we we’ll go over more more ideas but it’s basically I think like it would be a low commitment way to grow some edibles and then you’re able to kind of see how that goes well hiding a vegetable in with an ornamental and this is predominantly or or more traditionally done not hiding like tucking it in if you’re in like an HOA yeah it could be yeah that type of thing um you can certainly hide in that magnet but it’s also it’s also just a matter of maybe you don’t want to have a whole vegetable garden right true you want to intermingle too you want to use your uh side bed right and don’t want to commit to a yard or can’t and you only have a certain option uh people live in condos they don’t necessarily own the property they own the facility in which they live but some may have access to a small bed in which is very NE very close or next to the their residence so in that manner you can grow flowers and vegetables intermingled even in a manner of a no Edibles here you can work those in yeah absolutely so you can you can definitely do that or you can just maybe you’re just like hey I want to grow vegetables but I don’t want to um and I but I only want to put them here I don’t have to hide anything but I’m just going to have a a little bit of colorful Swiss chard amongst my roses or something I’m not I’m not an edible land landscape expert but yeah there’s rainbow Swiss chard which means that there is red green yellow and white stocked Orange um and then there’s plain white stocked right which it to someone who is not familiar to what Swiss chart is one would very easily identify that as an ornamental yeah it’s very pretty um so I think it would look nice maybe if you have some nice flowers planted it doesn’t get you would want to kind of put it behind the flowers as like a little backdrop you could put it in the front of the flowers but it might eventually kind of cover them but that would be a good one and then a lot of another reason is that you want to try this or one pro is that it does decrease the food miles it reduces Reliance on fossil fuel support Etc and it also provides you with some Horticultural therapy so maybe you’re like you know I always grow the same old flowers every year I’m going to try this and this will give you something else to grow and that sometimes will even if if you’re maybe getting sick of gardening or something it gives you a chance to grow something new and different give it a try see how it works um and that’s always good well explain the food Miles because we are not um what does that mean first of all sure so for the average American it’s about 1,500 miles from Farm to Table to get your food so when you are growing your own vegetables or utilizing a farmers’s market Etc buying local you cut down those miles quite drastic Bally especially if you’re growing your own it’s right outside your door essentially now we’re not against using fossil fuels for important and everyday things but whatever little bit we can utilize in order to De what is it detract from the excess or above use of it we would encourage that absolutely and um edible landscaping does promote you know sustainable gardening practices it maximizes water efficiency supports wildlife it reduces the use of chemicals in the landscape as so if you’re growing it yourself you’re probably not spraying it with a bunch of stuff not to the level of what a commercial Institute would absolutely and so that’s something to to definitely keep in mind is that no matter if you’re growing an edible landscape or if you’re growing your own backyard vegetables um a whole garden you are still you are still there’s an environmental positive component whether you want to acknowledge that or not whether you you think it’s good or bad for the environment it’s still there you’re still cutting down on the usage of certain resources and you’re encouraging Wildlife let’s say butterflies bees hummingbirds uh praying mantises fill in the blank to come into an a environment or a world in which they would not be if the garden did not exist or whatever type of uh landscape that you are creating right that’s that’s correct too so again we talked about the leafy greens I know Swiss CH we talked about kale and many people don’t realize that there’s ornamental kale that a lot of people will grow that they could eat but then there’s um typically growing edible kale or vegetable garden kale whatever Russian R kale curly kale there’s a dinosur k Dinosaur Kale yeah Dinosaur Kale is not the Latin term that is what we refer to as because uh Latin is not our second language right and those these could be a great addition to any Garden um and then even just something like lettuce a nice pretty lettuce or I think cabbage is really pretty when it grows well C you got burgundy cabbage or purple cabbage and then you’ve got uh green cabbage green cabbage um and I mean most people would be able to if that was if you’re trying to hide it that’s not the one to go with because a lot of people go that’s that that’s clearly a vegetable I don’t know what that is but that that’s a vegetable yeah yeah but it still looks cool leaks you could hide if you’re wanting to hide and well leaks you there supposedly in the book when you read the the book 16 leaks per square foot I’m almost certain that’s what it said I may be misquoting that but we found about six is really the um adequate number of leaks that will work in a square foot garden yes so that’s another thing is root crap so you could do onions leaks nine per square foot is what is recommended I would only go about six cuz grow leaks about bigger than broom handles right and that they take up a lot of room go ahead so you could do leaks as Joy had mentioned onions even potatoes you could do that might not work because it is a uh dig up yeah root crap so you might not be able to put it amongst your flowers because you might end up digging up your flowers but if you get creative maybe and then also what I say onions leaks you could do I think you could do carrots I don’t think carrots would be as OB no carrots would be fine if you’re trying to hide um beets beet greens look pretty so that that would work what else oh just the list can go on and on and on uh lettuces there’s a lot of different colored lettuces ground cover herbs oregano thyme don’t do mint because if you put mint in the ground you might as well move because you’re never going to get out of the ground unless you use chemicals in order to eradicate it because it’s just like it it’s related to creep and Charlie and it Roots underneath getg it will get aggressive it it it you need to call the law because it’s so aggressive uh in your backyard and I also we’re not going to touch on this much but fruit and nut trees are an option there’s dwarf varieties there’s a lot of different varieties it’s not necessarily edible landscaping but it’s an option there are certain and I’ve heard these stories from several people there are certain HOAs that you cannot have a fruit tree at least I believe it’s in the front yard however you can have a non bearing cherry tree in the front yard which we have which means it will Blossom put pretty flowers on but no fruit because they don’t want any of that mess on the ground or on the sidewalk or anything a yeah that makes sense so with that Holly uh what does make sense is Walton’s in.com yeah we know you care about where your food comes from canning and preserving your fruits vegetables visit honey be healthy.com just so you are aware all the advertisers that you listen to here on the program they are what financially supports the program and allows us to be on your radio if you would like to support them and buy a product that is going to be beneficial to your garden you can go to our parent website the Wisconsin vable gardner.com click on the season 8 tab they’re all listed at the top or the money Tab and all the coupon codes are listed there as well well dealing with weeds Holly some people want to have a pristine Garden no weeds at all other people like our guest a couple of weeks ago Joseph LOF house he allows everything to grow and then he selects the plants the vegetables that he has grown that have survived and saves the seeds for stronger uh genetics so he can grow them next year and they will survive not only the desert but the weeds and the problems that are coming in the garden yeah absolutely so you can definitely um think about that would decide what’s best for you but some people don’t want to uh have a pasture in their Garden I guess is is what I’m getting at some people want very clean let let’s talk about that so one thing you can do is you can mulch now this will not eliminate all of your weeds at all but it’ll help slow down weeds hopefully and yeah and then also it keeps the moisture in and it’ll choke out the the very weak weeds I think well the mo moisture now for if you followed our program if you we’ve got a a a regularly uh YouTube video YouTube videos at our YouTube channel the Wisconsin vegetable Gardener which can be found through our website we did we have weeds we are not one of those PBS programs where you look at it and it’s a the cover of uh Garden weekly uh there’s not weed to be found we have lives we are not able to gut in the garden and weed as one may think or we would like so we’ve went to weed or landscape fabric we’ll talk about that in a minute but it’s not necessarily the mulch there’s a many different options Holly when it comes to mulch we talked about this a couple of weeks ago you’ve got chemical seed-free grass clipping you got leaves you’ve got shredded paper you’ve got chemical-free straw or oat straw or barley straw or um in the tropicals they use uh pine tree fronds or pine not Palm fronds from coconut trees yeah so you do have options and and anything in between it can be you know people in the perennials will use wood chips and try to slow down and hold in moisture as well as weeds like you talked about there is not a here’s the here’s what I’m going to tell you because this will fix all your problems that doesn’t exist in this in this conversation no it does not so you it’s not like there’s a a magical solution for weeds is something that everybody deals with I don’t know if it makes you feel better or worse but you’re not alone so at least there’s that um so another option is landscaping fabric why didn’t you explain what we’re doing there landscaping fabric we have 14 or about 10 uh large raised beds 4ot wide from 12 16 to 8 foot long and we are um covering them with landscape fabric just because to slow down the weeds of those beds now fun fact about landscape fabric our beds are 4ot wide the way we constructed our beds the joints at the corner we made it we we just nailed them together didn’t think anything of it boards if it we’ve got 2×10 boards those boards are actually 1 and2 in wide instead of 2 in that’s the way the the world works with Lumber the because we put them on the outside of the incaps instead of the inside of the incaps the raised bed is actually 3 in wider which means the fabric doesn’t go all the way across so there’s an inch and a half gap on both sides where weeds are going to come up between the fabric and the wood so keep that uh notice that whenever you’re going for 4ft wide fabric if you haven’t if your incaps if your sideboards are on the outside of the incaps instead of the inside you’re going to have a gap right so that’s something to keep in mind um so then this is not necessarily a solution for everybody but straw Bell gardening that is essentially Weed Free and it’s an option and it’s a it’s a good solution I think yeah uh straw Bell barley oats whatever the uh situation H you have in your area uh you can archive one of our shows Joe Carson the creator of the straw Bell Garden uh book uh method and also the sponsor of balebuster uh a product in which is used to condition the internal portions of the bail you just don’t grab a bail plant in it you have to create a hummus or humus humus in the Bale in order to feed the plant that you’re growing in it works very well incredible feat of engineer uh engineering that he created living on the farm and discovering this uh and has made a life out of it because of an accidental uh Discovery absolutely so then that’s the straw Bells uh just good old pulling the weeds I know that seems like that’s not a solution but it is a solution especially if you can stay on top of it when they’re you have yeah when they’re small when you have if you have the time maybe you know you make it a point to come home from work every other day spend an hour pulling those weeds while you want if you got grandkids or kids and they’re always you know I want money I want money first of all 50 cents doesn’t go anywhere but nowadays but you can encourage them please do not give our niece and nephew 50 cents no no I’m not I’m just I’m just saying kids nowadays want some type of income yes so if you can teach them here is what the tomatoes look like Peppers look like uh leaf lettuce looks like gently pull the weeds around and make the bed clean they can earn a small income and understand the value of how much work it really does take to make a few dollars and they might just not go go blow it on some Legos that they have wanted uh they may value maybe they want to blow it on some Legos I’m trying to teach an ethic oh trying to teach a lesson a lesson here yes I’m going to tell those kids to get some Legos yeah okay yeahhuh you know I would yeah I know you would but it is a way in which um can be done now you can also use a garden hoe or a uh um Push Pull hoe when the seedlings are just emerging if you don’t want to pull each individual to knock them and and cut them as they’re sprouting you can do that as well if you’re not using any type of mulch yeah U so you’re not pulling them out you’re actually cutting them off and stressing them out and and they’re not going to you know get them before they get big yeah so that’s definitely you know a solution it’s probably not maybe the solution you magical solution you’re looking for but good old pulling the weeds is an option and doing it while they’re small and little by little you know that’s that’s an option and I think that for me it’s a matter of time you know how do you no like how do you how do you eat a horse right one one bite first of all let’s that’s a terrible terrible we most people who are listening to this program May consume meat but they’re not eating horse okay it’s aane okay how do you eat a horse one bite at a time so when you’re out there pulling those weeds you want to one section at a time one section at a time or maybe again like I said you two nights a week after you have dinner you go out there you pull some weed to put on a podcast or some music or news program whatever you got some people claim that pulling weeds is therapeutical yeah that’s absolutely correct so and maybe it’s saving your marriage somehow I don’t know but um so yeah that’s that’s an option as well and then tilling tilling no till you don’t with tilling you can till the problem with tilling is a lot of these weeds when you disturb or cut up the roots they are designed by nature to reproduce so a uh piece of grass that’s growing there you pull it out most of the roots are coming up with that that uh the top growth and you dispose of it you run a tiller over it now you’ve got 75 different chunks of roots that in two weeks is going to look like a grass grassy lawn because all those follicles have generated roots and have now began to grow that’s why people will say well I till and now it’s worse now than it ever was because you’re disturbing The Roots you’re cutting the roots up and now they are all multiple plants you can spray if you choose to use a harmful chemical you can there are more organic environmentally friendly chemicals not green products is a green product no more weeds they are a sponsor it is a non-selective herbicide applied directly to the plants or grass no more weeds is biologically environmentally safe USDA biobased biopreferred and certified product you can find it at natg greenproducts dcom and at also the founder of the permaculture student welcome to the program Matt yeah thanks for having me well thank you for taking time out of your schedule not only to educate Holland myself but all of our listeners and I’ll start with this have you always wanted to teach and guide students and what is your background did you grow up as a gardener or did you find this in an aha moment later on in life it’s because uh it really came to me later on in life out of a lot of necessity and I didn’t grow up doing this my mom had a garden I didn’t realize that my I’d been told that my great-grandfather was a gardener I didn’t realize that my my his brothers were farmers and his dad was a farmer until later on in life after I was doing it for a long time my parents only shared it with me later um but what happened for me was um I was a professional musician and I was loving it uh I was I was the bass player for Rachel Ray’s husband’s band okay so it was an easy gig lots of good food uh lots of fun and my wife got cancer and wanted to go home and we were we were still like newly wed we had just had a baby um she wanted to recover with her mom and I you know she did that thing where she prays about it and then you ask you to pray about it and then you get the answer you don’t want to hear right yeah that’s what happened and I listened to prayer so we left um New York City and went to the West Coast to the Foothills outside yede and we lived in a garage for almost 10 years uh and I learned in that 140 degree Fahrenheit soil how to grow an abundance of food uh and in some cases with no water uh at it and so I I feel really blessed that I have been able to provide for my family I shifted out of the music industry to to get health care initially and then I was a teacher and then I was tenured and had an English Department and then I was trying to create curriculum around this gardening around permaculture around homesteading around all this science that makes it Hands-On for kids again in a real I mean it’s physics it’s chemistry it’s everything it’s beautiful the kids get it you know and what was wild was I did I did all the stuff for the kids and then all the adults took all my courses and so I was I was I was just honored just absolutely blessed and honored to to be that facilitator and today 24 Publications since later 15 online courses 10,000 students in my courses you know I I’ve been able to teach people all over the world how to live more regeneratively regeneratively from the soil to their Garden all the way to down to the microscopy and DNA testing but all the way to you know mindset as well and Entrepreneurship I have a a conference I I do every year called R future and in some ways I’m still that facilitator that that that high school English teacher that’s preparing the students for the next stage of their life you know to level up and to pick a path uh and so that’s that’s really what I do I showcase things in a way that allows people to find career paths that are that are ethical that that allow them to make money doing the right thing and and and grow incredible food at the same time improve their soil at the same time and monitor and verify it so it’s a it’s an incredible thing well it’s amazing um how bad things would turn out if everything we prayed for that we wanted we got how how how different our lives would be and how fewer impacts we can have on other people it it’s yeah here here’s what I want because this is my vision you know it’s all messed up in our vision uh compared to what we’re supposed to be doing right right yeah well I mean when I was a musician I really tried to hide you know my light under a bushel because I was the bass player and I wasn’t the leader of the band I wasn’t there to toot my horn wasn’t there to do anything but play straightforward rock baselines you know right and smile and I I had this this this thing inside me this Spirit of service and I it was turned on when I saw what was happening when I was a substitute teacher at first uh in these schools the kids were being taught anything the kids were being taught in a way that demoralized them so fundamentally that they hated education right and so I just I just I know there’s a better way um and so I I I’ve I’ve been that’s what I’ve been working on is the the the actual bridge to a regenerative future so that people can have jobs where they create their jobs they are their own boss they we need eom again they love what they do instead of going somewhere and hating what they do for 40 years and then getting to retire and live 10 more years and that’s it yeah yeah and and the reality is it’s like we need all the traditional local economy pillars to return we need those to return we need them inputs and outputs to be more regenerative local and this keeps the local economy strong and resilient and so anytime there’s a ruption whether National or International that Community is buffered and protected and resilient most definitely so your most recent book is called regenerative soil you know let’s talk about the book tell us about it and um just give us more information about them yeah so my whole thing is trying to break things down so that we get that micro to macro connection it connects to handson action that we can take so whether it’s the pH or the so organic matter or whether you have Micro risal fungi there or not these things we have direct action that we can take and there’s direct results and so I break down soil into five main categories the minerals the soil biology the organic matter the air and water and the plants and their roots in photosynthesis and and the these things when they’re in harmony we we develop soil and it seems like a no-brainer when you actually break it down you’re like where did the soil come from in the first place right what’s most natural you know and that’s the thing is no one really ask that question because you know people be like how can there be you know all the minerals everywhere in the world for plants to do what they do and it’s like well there’s a legacy of those plants being there and so when we look at why and how those Cycles allow the phosphorus allowed the nitrogen allowed all the elements down to the Copper down to the Cobalt down to the selenium you know what I mean all of it we are the micronutrients the trace minerals all of it we see a very different picture than what’s being taught in universities and schools by looking to what is natural how soils developed we actually can hop on that same cycle and speed it up and amplify it and so we can build soil through natural Pathways natural cycles and it’s really not rocket science I’ll give you just a simple example because of tillage because of synthetic fertilizer being so costic because it’s it’s a purified element it’s like a white powder and we all know what like absorbent and destructive costic white powders can be right we it’s like a cleaning agent right right and so that’s what people are adding often to their soils when they’re adding these nitrates you know and so they’re they’re they’re really hurting the fungi and then they’re tilling it which is also killing the fungi and all plants um that we that we cultivate that we eat um almost well almost all not the brasas not uh for the most part people haven’t figured that out there’s a way to do it and then um like Swiss Shard and Beats those aren’t going to be micro risal but almost all of our food is Michael risal and when we say micro risal fungi increases the soil surface area by 10,000 times and it’s 33 to 50% of carbon sequestration in the global like carbon sequestration calculation it’s the it’s the symbiot of those plants it’s literally the other half so we’re really just bringing back what was once there in nature and seeing 10,000 times the phosphorus uptake I mean it’s mindboggling the difference but it’s simple in the same sense it’s like you’re dusting some inoculant on the roots and then putting it in the soil and then if you don’t disturb your soil do you do low till or no till that next year that fungi will still be there in the dead Roots the dead Roots turn into inoculant and so the new roots that arrive the next year they get inoculated by those dead roots that the fun re reanimates so that’s how it’s it’s done in nature it’s regenerative it comes back every year without you doing anything just like Razia you know night the nitrogen fix everyone uses it Farmers say you only use it once they’re right it’s regenerative so that’s that’s that’s what I I really focus on is breaking things down so we understand the way nature did it the actual Cycles involved the actual microbes involved down to the individual species down to the enzymes down to the ions and making it so farmers can take action so it’s cleaning clear and I I get feedback from Farmers with 30,000 acres 100 you know 100 acres uh gardeners all over the world universities have doubled their yields with this book uh and they say it’s because it’s clear it’s because it it connects the test results with what you actually can do and so that’s that’s it’s been it’s been incredible to to provide this resource I it’s my 20 it’s my 23rd book so I’ve been at this a bit working on this whole thing so well I yeah it’s a real it’s been a journey I want to bring up because I know we have teachers listening all over the country with your your program here what is the most challenging thing that you face when working with students and how have you overcome that that may help teachers who are in regular schools work with their children that have uh short attention spans I guess oh well I think the most important thing when you’re working with kids is to connect to Prior learning and to connect to something that they truly care about so you have to give Kids Choice and you have to give kids like skin in the game it has to be relevant to them I taught in the sixth most violent county in North America and I worked at all the schools I worked at the schools with the the kids who were basically it’s the farm school for the you know the kids who would be in juvie otherwise right I worked at that school I worked you know I did that all of that and the thing is you got to just they’re all hurting they don’t want you to like point that out but they are hungry for authentic authenticity man this this is so important if you want to reach people regardless of what we’re teaching what we’re doing you got to reach them authentically and so I would engage them I would I would go out and we’d plant seeds together and we would grow like a garden like either a raised garden bed in the school which is what I did and and and I brought in all the seeds and I said pick out whatever you want and I brought in like 200 300 varieties uh I you can write seed companies and they share their quote Old seed it’s not old it’s technically expired because of the rules uh for governing uh seed companies for selling and it’s not it’s not technically old but they give it away free and you can get it because you’re teaching kids get those that seed PL let them pick the seeds because they’re going to pick the weird things they’re going to pick the things that are crazy I think uh RAR seeds.com is great because you get such fun seeds from them uh and and then they get to express their personality they usually choose something that’s related to a food related to a family member I’ve seen this happen so many times and they’re I’m going to plant this we’re going to get these Tomatoes I’m going to surprise my mom I’m going to surp surpris my grandma and you let them choose that and the the connection in the story comes out of that and by you not not stepping into that space you let them like open themselves into that space so I’m all about having like Icebreaker activities where you’re doing things Hands-On with kids in such a way that uh they’re really disarmed uh they’re we’re not doing homework you know right out of the gate we’re doing things that uh connect to who we are why we are and it’s authentic now we’re doing something um that makes it real fantastic well we’ve really enjoyed having you on the program Matt can you tell our listeners where to get a hold of you where to find all of your great information yeah my for garden questions and garden answers you got a question you can send it on over to galk r@ gmail.com that’s Garden talkradio gmail.com or you can call us anytime at 1 1800 927 7469 let’s see what I felt like I felt like I was on a game show welcome back to guess the cheese yeah okay yeah alrighty let’s go with this here Bruce writes in the uh question is whether to use black ground cover or not when mulching around house or building should I put the ground cover down first then put Mulch on top of it the weeds seem to grow on top of the ground cover thank you so I would do the ground cover I would put the weed barrier the plastic on top and that would be your final thing put the weed barrier on top of the ground cover because otherwise you’re going to have weeds and everything would you agree yeah you’re going to put your your ground cover you you know the ground cover or not uh but you I would do it on top right yeah to keep the weed and then you can use a light mulch uh on top of the weed barrier of the black plastic around the ornament yeah double it up double it up yep um so next question here is I hear your show on wmbs 590 my question is I have no animal manure I’ve been told I need to use it is this true I only use compost that I make I was told I need to add a can of beer to my compost each spring have you ever heard of this thank you very much Kathy well you don’t have to add a can of beer it does stimulate the microbial life in the um compost pile and can help uh speed up some of the uh increases the moisture in the pile is a great way to use old beer up and uh plus it adds um nitrogen and yeast to the stimulate the bacteria and breaking down the materials more rapidly so you can add the beer to uh your compost bin uh you do not need Cal manur or animal manure um so you can use the compost in which you make whatever that is whether you know if you get it from the city you want to be careful where that source is if you get animal maner you want to be careful of what that source is because uh with that Source the what is it persistent herbicide um I forget what the the apparent name of it is uh the horses eat uh gron gron yeah uh that will be potent uh and turn your compost into killer compost basically it’s a chemical that farmers spray on the fields in order to kill everything but the grass Cow Horse eats it uh curtain into compost still active uh but no make your perfect perfectly fine to make your own compost you do not need animal Miner there are people and very successful farms uh that do not incorporate animal manure into their fields or their Gardens so don’t feel that you have to you don’t need to not required if you do have some have at it but you can do just fine without we don’t we don’t add any animal manura to our Gardens we make our own compost and or buy it uh when we need it so there you go uh what is the cheapest cages no the cheap tomato cages just don’t work for me anymore the lowcost ones I buy at the hardware store what is a better alternative so I don’t have to buy those High pric tomato cages and she’s referring to these ones I think they’re like $5 or $20 or I’m not going to give them the name because they’re not uh I I don’t know which ones you’re talking but they’re like $5 $20 a piece all right so you can do the Florida weave that’s an option you could also if you don’t want to maybe you don’t want to commit a whole row Maybe just growing like a few Tomatoes you could just do like a smaller Florida weave where you take two small posts and then use some people will use like old bed sheets that they tear into like cloth strips or old kitchen towels you know any old Linens works for this and then you use that to support your tomato plants on a smaller scale or the Florida weave as a larger scale Florida weave two post or based on how long the SP the spacing is on your bed but TST heavy tpost works best uh you can get that at your hardware store and you’re going to run three four uh heavy duty strings uh we use agricultural twine and what occurs is as the tomato plant grows it will hang on that twine and that twine acts as a cage so you can get Juke rope you can get any type of you know rope that you want to use but it’s a much cheaper alternative you can go to our parent website the Wisconsin vegetable garden.com and click on the search bar and type in Florida weave we’ve got a number of videos there um in which shows how to do it it’s like the side of a a boxing ring uh the only difference that we have adapted to instead of running one single string we run two and then open it up for the plant to grow through to have twice as much supp support as it hangs and like you know tomato cages the cheap ones you can only get so many in a row with the with the Florida weave you can do single stems you can do normal stems you can pack two or three more tomatoes in a row essentially than what you could in a cage so something to think about when it comes to um supporting your tomato Tomatoes yeah support group for your Tom some more yeah well it’s time for the portion of the program where we talk about what we learned today and what I learned was that uh Our Guest Mike Powers mat Matt Powers uh taught in a very dangerous uh school district and was able to engage in the children when because of the permaculture agricultural gardening background that he had and and connected with the children were they were at not where he wanted them to be yes um so what I learned today is that you never know where life’s going to take you and I know that that’s like a life lesson that everybody learns but I just am always amazed by our guests and the stories they tell and I’m always grateful for that so well with that being said uh what we learned today is brought to you by honey be healthy yeah whether you’re a gardener a be hobbyist or professional beekeeper Honey Bee Healthy ink has the products to help you maintain a healthy Hive and thriving Garden for more information on how to use the honey be healthy in your garden visit honey be healthy.com that’s honey the letter be healthy.com tune in the program next week where we will be discussing watering containers raised beds ground irrigation by hand we’ll cover all of that as well as pressure canning there is a place and a right way of doing such Our Guest he is a uh as author as well as a study a studier of insects Jared Daniels will be with us and we’ll answer your garden question so until next week for Hol I’m joybear and we will see you in the garden [Applause] [Music]
