Scuds dying in new jar

I collected my first jarrarium from a local creek (midlands uk) yesterday and it seems like all the scuds have died overnight. Yesterday they were super active and now they’re all dead at the bottom of the jar.

Can anyone tell me where I went wrong? All the material in the jar is from the same location. The plants were fully submerged in the water on collection so I thought they would be enough to sustain oxygen levels?

I would collect more plants and get them settled then dump about half the water. Once the plants look good only fill the jar to about 3/4 full with water. You need a little more air at the top and the plants need to be established to let the jar support scuds.
