welcome to gardenwise Adventures my name is Malle and today we’re going to do another plant of the week and this year I’m focusing on the herbs that I’ve grown I live in Utah Zone 6/7 and I try to grow an edible water efficient landscape here in Utah and I the plant that I wanted to talk about today is time now th is hugely versatile it is versatile in both in the landscape and it is edible and it is medicinal now as I’ve said in my previous plan of the week videos I and I’ll link a playlist up here I am not going to be discussing health benefits and I’m not going to be discussing medical benefits because I’m just I’m not a nutritionalist I’m not an herbalist and I don’t want to give out misinformation but all of that is readily available online and I would suggest relying on reputable resources but before you use anything medically definitely look for some for people who know what they’re talking about to get your information from so anyway let’s talk about how to grow time and show you some of the varieties that I have now before I show you the varieties that I have let’s talk a little bit about time hardiness is Hardy between zones 2 and nine and the majority of them will definitely survive the cold of temperatures between zone 5 and 9 now that being said there are there’s one thing that will kill time re very quickly over the winter and that is cold wet soil if it doesn’t have good drainage and it sits in cold wet soil it the roots tend to rot and they don’t survive the winters so if you want your time time to survive the winter make sure to put it in an area that is well draining it’s easy to grow it doesn’t like a lot of water it doesn’t like any fertilizer and it will grow in most soils so let’s show you the varieties that I have so I wanted to show you one of my favorite times first this is foxley time it’s a variegated time it has beautiful pink flowers Midsummer and it gets huge this time is about three uh well I’d say 2 feet across only about 18 in is tall absolutely gorgeous it’s easy to grow and it’s very very showy this time is on a slope it’s in well- drained soil and it gets watered about once every two weeks absolutely gorgeous time it’s got a very strong scent in flavor so this is also another one of the edible times that is really good so you can take this inside and dehydrate it or use it fresh whatever way you would like and I love the variegated edges on the leaves and how some the leaves are white it’s just very very attractive and showy now this is another little guy I think this is just called Golden time it’s got some white variegation on the leaf and what I’ve noticed is it seems that any of the highly variegated times with the more yellow coloring seem to struggle a little bit more in my soils I do have a little heavier soil especially down here that stays a little wet that stays wet a little bit longer so it did struggle last year it is coming back this year this is its second year in Grand around now I do not know the name of this variety it’s just a beautiful low growing green variety no variegation to it beautiful pink flowers Midsummer and a very very nice kind of Caraway scent to it so this might be Caraway time I’m not sure I just don’t remember and I didn’t keep the tag this is another favorite that I think I’m going to just dig out clumps and spread around my yard this is Dune Valley time the ground cover in here is actually Arctic raspberries so I do need to dig this up and move it so it doesn’t get overtaken but you can see how green it is how tight the leaf formation is and then you’ve got little tiny bits of yellow variegation instead of white variegation absolutely gorgeous plant like I said I need to save it from my arctic raspberries this is the low growing mother of time very very dense mat this one is excellent for covering large areas and as a landscape plant instead of lawn and this is one of my oldest times this is just a regular English time and look at the flowers on it it flowers really early it doesn’t get any special care this one is one of the only ones that has survived in my garden beds but it reseed itself here and grows along the edge where it’s a little bit drier where it has a little bit better drainage and it just kind of tends to Reed itself all over the place I usually let one survive up here and the bees absolutely love it and then this is just another English time it might be a little bit a different variety than you know I don’t know if there’s different varieties in the English times this one was planted two years ago it is flowering like the other one but it has a little bit more of a taller open Habit to it now there are hundreds of varieties of times dozens of different scents and flavors and many different uses of time there’s a really low growing times that can be lawn substitutes although they don’t take foot traffic very well and then there’s dozens of different varieties that can be used in cooking so I really would love to hear your experience with time which ones are your favorites which ones do you have experience with and do you have any suggestions to help them get through the cooler wetter winter areas so hopefully this video has been helpful to you if it has been helpful I hope you like subscribe share it with your friends and go have a wonderful garden Adventure [Music]

  1. Hi M’Li, I really enjoy these plant of the week videos.

I grow several varieties of thyme as well, and my favorite is “Sparkling Bright”. It’s marginally hardy, but it overwintered in my zone 7a PA garden. It’s variegated and has the most lovely fragrance – citrusy but also sweet. It’s one of my favorite scents in the entire garden.

    Happy gardening!
