I don’t believe so. You want leaves to be growing. Just make sure you don’t over water it. That’s how you will for sure get root rot.

I have a cutting off a “wood” esque plant. It has grown three leave shoots and no roots. It’s been a month and a half and its happily living its best root-less life.
Its two sisters have grown their roots, but it did take 4 weeks, even with rooting hormone. You can’t rush, but the leaves are a good sign that it wants to survive. 🙂
