Cross-posting in NativePlantGardening, but some of y’all probably have experience with the US-native hollies. I took these cuttings 5/25 from a wild plant source and got them under wraps the same day; Dip’n Gro was used at roughly 1:10 dilution with a several second dip and swirl, and they were placed in a ~68°F room in front of a distant grow light (± 20 inches away).

Today (6/17) I noticed several of them had developed aerial roots from nodes above ground, which I’ve highlighted in the photos. (The water droplets on the cuttings are from me dribbling water around them after moving them to their own, separate bag; there was condensation in the old bag, but not THAT much.)

Has anyone ever seen winterberry do this before? Would these roots be okay to plant further in the substrate to continue growing, or are they not going to transition to the coir plug well? Could this indicate problems with the buried parts of the cuttings? I’d check visually, but I’m concerned about damaging the aerial roots if they’re the only viable growths on the stem. I’ve never dealt with a plant that makes aerial roots, aside from an Easter cactus where I generally leave them alone and haven’t attempted cuttings from them.

    Cheers!
