Jarrariums

Does cork allow for gas exchange?

I have an eco jar I made from a bunch of leaf mulch, driftwood and lake water that's a couple weeks old. There's already a whole bunch of snails and a couple planaria swimming around in there, plus a pretty substantial algal/bacterial bloom happening atm.

I have it "capped" with a coffee filter and rubber band but I kind of hate the way that looks lol. If I can find a piece of cork to cap it off, will that still allow for gas exchange?

I'm also considering closing the lid on the jar entirely, but I'm hesitant about creating anaerobic conditions with so much decaying matter in there.

  1. Comment to add: part of the reason I’m thinking about closing the lid is to prevent evaporation. I want an enclosed ecosystem that is self sustainable but I also don’t want to suffocate everything.

I also don’t want any bugs getting out so a lid of some kind is necessary

For the most part, no. That is why it is used as a plug or stopper for wine bottles.
Dried cork allows some gas exchange but I doubt it would be enough for what you are trying to do.
