Plant Propagation

Can someone help me save my little guy??

This is Franklin (or what’s left of him 😢) For context, I’ve never had much of a green thumb, but Franklin is my longest living plant (I’ve had him for 6 years now?) If I remember correctly, he’s a Pothos, though I know it’s really hard to tell right now.

I’ve never propagated a plant before, so I’m not really sure if I’m doing it right, but I put him in this little planter with some water after I realized his roots were dried up. It’s been about a week now though, and it doesn’t seem like he’s growing at all. He’s still green though, so I’m hoping that means he’s still alive? Do I need to trim the bottom part off where the dead root is to get him to start growing again?

Since he’s so small and fragile now I’m afraid to try anything else without knowing what I’m doing, so I really appreciate any advice or tips anyone can give me. I know it’s probably a Hail Mary at this point, but I’ve been through a lot with Franklin and I’m very sentimentally attached. I’m just really hoping there’s still a chance of reviving him, even if it’s small 🙏🏻

That black part at the bottom is rotting. You need to get rid of it. I would try to cut the black part off without losing that little bit of growth. But I might try to cut below the leaf as well, but keep the node where it will root. Since it is rotting in water, I would pot it up in perlite or spanghum moss in a bag with a little water. You can just put it in potting soil if that is all you have and keep it a little damp until it roots.

Might be time to get a new pothos though.

You can put it in a prop box. Mix some sphagnum moss with perlite, squeeze it out until its wet but not dripping wet and lay the little guy in the box. Pop a lid on it (you can use a small plastic container – I find the smaller my prop box the more success I have). Just lay the little guy on top of the moss and sort of snug it down but don’t cover it.

I did this with the tiniest piece of marble queen pothos a few weeks ago and it’s now in a little pot of soil. She grew roots like a champ – I was actually shocked – she was rotting in every other medium I tried to prop her in.

The size of my prop was nearly identical as you have so I’d say you have a fantastic chance.
