Espalier row orientation: opinions wanted

Hi there, I’m planning to create a mini orchard in my backyard by espaliering fruit trees. The spot in my backyard gets excellent north sun and afternoon light from the west and is un-shaded.

My question for the forum is: would you orient the rows of trees to run north-south, or would you orient them to run east-west?

The area is 3.5m x 3.5m, so space differences between the orientation options doesn’t matter.

I’ve attached some chicken scratch images to demonstrate the options.

East – West so they all get that north sun evenly (in theory)
