Succulent Plants

Bought a house last year with a succulent garden. Zone 5b

I'm totally new to succulents but I would have thought growing them outdoors in this climate would be impossible. I live in Canada, zone 5b with -30 °c winters.

We moved in August of 2023 and I thought for sure they were not going to make it through the winter. But here we are summer of 2024 and they are thriving! They looked completely rotted and brown in March but they bounced back with no problems. How is this possible??? I'm tempted to try to plant more, for science lol.

Also, thanks to this sub, I now know I'm witnessing some cool death blooms! So pretty! I guess this means I have pups on the way???

Sempervivums- they actually need to be outside and need the cold to go dormant, pretty much impossible to grow inside. I grow in MN USA yearly also. You may also have some Cacti that will come back after Winters- we have three native Cacti in MN and it’s pretty similar weather (4b)

semester are great for us more northern areas. I’m in zone 7 so a bit warmer than u, but outside we have a lot of semps, optuntia, and sedum.
