Plant Identification

Are these mushrooms in my basil pot? Do I leave them there?

They literally popped up almost overnight, Possibly within three days since that’s the last time I went to check on my basil. It’s been storming on and off since last night and I just went to check on my basil and green onions to make sure they weren’t taking on too much water. Are these things safe to leave in the pot or should I remove immediately?

They are safe to leave. Their presence indicates soil rich in organic matter, but also possible overwatering

Mushrooms are almost always safe in flower pots and are hugely beneficial. They are not plants however. R/mushrooms or r/mycology would be a better consultant. Hope this helps

  3. They look like a species of Mycena to me. Mushrooms aren’t plants. They’re more closely related to humans, yet clearly really far from that.

Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of a mass network of thread-like structure known as mycelium which grows under the substrate. This is why mushrooms can appear to come from nowhere.

Those specific ones have already spread their spores. Getting rid of the fruiting bodies is fine, but they’ve already done their work. The mycelium of mycena species can live off of dead plant matter, but allegedly some have evolved to live off of living roots. I haven’t studied mycology in a couple decades.

I would recommend posting these pictures to r/Mycology and r/MushroomID, since they are distinctly separate from the plant kingdom. Be sure to include your location. I’m sure someone there will be more learned than I once was.
