Plant Propagation

Help With Propagating Pothos Browning

Hi there, I’m very new to owning plants. I have never propagated before and I’m having issues that Google isn’t giving me any solid answers to fixing it.

I was gifted a pothos clipping, with 2 leaves and 2 nodes. I was told to keep both nodes under water at all times, and to change the water once a week.

I’ve had it for about 3 weeks thus far, and have changed it every Monday. I’ve been using tap water, and it was doing okay. I rinse the cup, and lightly rinse the roots because I notice slimy stuff builds up.

It was doing okay until yesterday, at least I think it was. The two leaves on the clipping were full, and looked good. The leaf on the end had a new sprout coming in, and about 1 week in it “separated” from the mother leaf and started growing outward. I noticed last week on Saturday that the very edge of the leaf that the sprout was growing from, had turned a bit brown.

So on Monday when I changed the water, I looked through Google some more and saw purified or distilled water was better then tap water because it can have chemicals in it harmful to the plant. So I used purified water that I had on hand, but it was drinking water from a water bottle. Yesterday I noticed that the sprout, which had been doing good, is turning brown. The brown on the full leaf has not spread, but it’s quite a large piece of the new sprouting leaf is brown. And it’s starting to unravel but barely, so that worries me.

It’s not in direct sunlight so I don’t think it’s from the sun. It’s next to one of my windows, but the blinds stay shut for the most part.

I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if I should or can cut it. I don’t want it to spread, but I only have the one clipping and I don’t know how to fix it or if I even can. Is it the water being from a water bottle, or micro plastics? Is the water actually not good for it? Is distilled better? Was tap okay? Can I cut it? Will it grow back if I cut it? I’m open to literally all advice because I have zero clue what I’m doing here. Video attached of the plant.

  1. I also would like to ask a second question, how long does it take for roots to grow? I’ve had it for 3 weeks like I said and I’m getting a lot of mixed answers when I research it.

Don’t cut . Change the water twice a week. The leaf is fine even if it dies off , Most of the time when propagating pothos it will kind of suck the nutrients out of one or 2 of the leaves to grow the roots . Id put it closer to a window/ indirect sunlight bc progress seems very slow for 3 weeks. Also abruptly changing the type of water could’ve been an issue too . Some plants don’t mind regular tap, especially if that’s what your friend was using on the rest of the plant.
