  1. Silica is the mineral primarily responsible for healthy, strong stems and stalks in plants.

Calcium is crucial for cell wall stability and integrity.

  2. Hi, here in the Annapolis Valley, NS…in 2 storms this July again this year we have broken the 30 year average for rainfall in the month of July…(2 storms with 100 + mm of rain) We used to get just barely 100 mm for the entire month!

  3. Can the straw be buried in the raised bed in the fall, left there to rot all winter?
Or do we have to store it and wait until spring?

  4. If you have lots of pollinators but get 2+ days of rain they won't come out to pollinate so you have to pollinate yourself. This has caused me allot of problems this year

  5. Any way to beat the heat? Most days over ninety degrees getting flowers but no fruit. Planting another crop August first along with cucumbers and fall lettuce.

  6. My zucchini has a ton of female fruit ready to be pollinated but the males are lacking!! I always hand pollinate them if there is a male flower that has usuable pollen

  7. I've had happen several times, where the zucchini/other squash is growing growing growing, quite nicely, when all of a sudden it will start to soften, and die, at a pretty decent size. That's frustrating as all get out.

  8. Do you have any references for denatured DNA in pollen? It should be pretty well packaged up with histones into chromatin and protected. I’ve never heard that theory before.

  9. A good solution to the problem of plants only producing male flowers is to aim for Parthenocarpic varieties.

  10. Can we use rotted leaves? I collected leaves during the fall and still have some that I add to my grass clippings for compost. Can this finely chopped material be used the same way?

  11. Mine would only get three to four inches and due so I pulled them out. That take up too much space for the lack of production. I don’t have the space to waste on them.

  12. I actually planted my squash a little close to each other and am fortunate enough that lambs quarter & wood sorrel grows wild where I planted. I have just let the “weeds” grow in & around my squash which has kept my extremely sandy soil from excessive moisture loss. I do top off the lambs quarter so it doesn’t shade out the squash now in the season, but leading up to it I didn’t do any weeding of those two plants & have been eating squash daily since July began which is the earliest I’ve ever had fruits in northwest Michigan.

  13. The best, most immediate solution to add calcium is a 1:10 mixture of whole milk [preferably raw] and water; spray on plant and pour around root zone. Works like a charm, very quickly.
