  1. How do you handle garden overwhelm, and what is your biggest fear? Thanks for hanging out in the garden with us! -CaliKim & CameraGuy

  2. Loving this new series! Proud of you, CG!! So, last week, in the heat wave, we were focusing on ensuring everything got the water it needed. Some of my hydrangea blooms fried because it was just too hot. I think having gravel around them is not helping at all. May need to pull and mulch instead. The edibles are very happy though. The tomatoes and peppers are loving the heat, even though I lost so many blooms. We’ve cooled down significantly this week and we have a few days of rain on the forecast. I’m looking forward to the growth after the rain! Thanks for having us! Myr 6b

  3. I like the hat, Jerry!! Kim hubby bought some shade clothes for me. He even put them up for me. To cover the tomatoes. I made pickled beets on Saturday. I canned 7 jars. Take care, you two. It's finally raining 🌧 here in NC.

  4. Needed that encouragement, Kim. I need to use shade cloth and I haven't wanted to deal with it. But your positive practicality is, as always, encouraging. Your calm voice can drown out the whiny gardener in me (almost!) every time!

Oh! And meant to add that I do get overwhelmed. Especially in July…the first blooming is done, the heat is on, some things don't look great in the heat, my post-Spring motivation is low. Last year my garden looked sad in August. So this year, I'm waiting until early dusk and going out when it's a bit cooler and quiet and doing something for 5 minutes after watering. Mulching. Deadheading. It's GOOD to see how much it's adding up (because a lot of the time I'll get into it and go 10 mi, 15 min. 30 min. Gotta trick our brains to get out there I guess!).

  5. Kim, honestly, I threw up my hands. I said I was done. I just felt so overwhelmed. Then I sat and looked around and watched your live video again. I'm working on the large pallet now to place the grow bags, and 1 will be full of pollinator seeds. Thanks for all they you two do!!

  6. I like Jerry's hat! I still have my shade cloth up. I'm in SoCal and it's still 100 degrees. I've been picking tomato hornworms off the tomato plant over the past three days. Yuck! I saw a big brown grasshopper on it just now. I want to use Bonide Tomato & Vegetable on the plant but it says don't use if temps are expected to be over 90 degrees.

  7. Great tip on marking the shadecloth corners.

Glad camera guy was able to remove the invasive berries so you can use that space for storage. Looking forward to seeing whatt he comes up with.

  8. Love it! Just the motivation I needed! I get everything all pruned neat and tidy, then it rains a half inch, and everything grows another foot.. LOL I'm not giving up, though, because before I know it, the snow will be piling up. Way to face your fears CG!

  9. My garden is fried. I live in Phoenix, AZ. I bought shade cloth but my husband never put it up. Oh well, I'll plant again in late September. Try, try again.

  10. Love it! Btw – I don't think you need to color your hair. But I get it. I was a natural blonde until my kids came along. Then, I was an UN-natural blonde for many, many, years. Now – I yam what I yam – and it's so freeing. Ok – back to gardening content! 🙃

  11. Thank you for being so encouraging. Shade cloth in the day, frost covers at night. It could get tiresome. I so appreciate the encouragement.

  12. You’ve done such a beautiful job with the deck. However I noticed something that would cause problems in my rainy area. At 4:40, it looks like your deck ends at the same point that your down/vertical trellis begins. I’d be concerned about water being trapped between the deck and vertical boards (ie your horizontal and vertical planes). Usually, you’d want to see the deck extend a bit beyond the “down” board so that the runoff can drain directly onto the ground outside of the deckline instead of possibly being trapped at that location and/or running down that vertical board and being trapped at its base. That way, you can head off any potential swelling and rotting wood, in addition to reducing possible erosion of the soil at the base. You might also leave a gap at the bottom of the trellis so that water can flow freely across the ground without being trapped or delayed/piling against the base/wood. Maybe someone with construction experience in your part of the country can tell you if these are valid concerns.

  13. My pole beans, many pumpkins and even my strawberry watermelons keeled over from all this heat. So sad. 😢 aphids are taking over a bell pepper but everything else doing great

  14. I really love this style of filming. I had to laughed when Jerry mentioned Kims stash of sticks because I have a stash of my own. I feel so much better about them now. Jerry! BRAVO for facing your claustrophobia fear! It takes a strong person to do that. Kim, you look great and fit and seems you've lost a bit of weight or maybe that's just how fit you are. Love this vid and looking forward to more.

  15. OMG, Thank You so much for this video content!! I am feeling the same. Every day I need to prune something! Honestly I feel this early season heat takes some of the fun out of it. My husband and I are going to research drip watering to give me a bit of a break next year.

  16. Love the Calikim Garden Life series. Keeps me inspired to continue in the garden despite the mid season garden slowdown here in Central Ohio.

  17. I am loving this series! Like Kim said, it makes me feel like I am there with you. Nice idea for content!
